âPete,â I called as he walked away from me after lunch without so much as a word. âPete,â I yelled louder when he ignored me again and jogged after him as he made his way back to the stable. I reached out for his arm and nearly smashed into him when he stopped dead in his tracks and spun to face me.
âWhat?â he spat out, his green eyes ablaze. In that moment, I didnât know whether I wanted to kiss him until he forgave me or tell him to stop sulking like a big baby.
I did neither.
My ego needed to take a chill pill and I needed to find out exactly where Iâd screwed up. âWhat did I say? Iâm sorry, okay. I didnât mean to upset you or offend you. Iâ¦â The dirt at my feet suddenly looked interesting, and I kicked at a lone pebble. âIâm not good at this. What did I say?â
âEarly mornings and no fancy coffee?â His voice rose in frustration. âNo sleeping on the ground.â He groaned and pulled his hat off, running his fingers through his hair. Blowing out a breath and looking up at the sky the same way I did when I was praying for some kinda patience. âDo you think Iâm some kind of princess because Iâm from the city? That I canât handle it?â His shoulders sagged and the disappointment showed in his eyes. âI may not have done a muster before, but I can survive for a few days without luxuries if thatâs what youâre worried about. If itâs a safety issue, fine. But if not, stop treating me like a⦠aââ
âA guest whoâs under no obligation to come here and work? A guest who I assumed might wanna relax after coming off his horse yesterday?â Then it dawned on me. âA..." I hesitated. What did I call him? We weren't even close to being boyfriends or partners. I shook my head and got back on track. "A man who's important to me and who I still havenât asked how heâs feeling. Fuck.â I rubbed my forehead. âIâm sorry. Iâve got shit on my mind and I didnât even think to ask. How is your head? How are you feelinâ?â
âHeadâs a little sore to touch, but Iâm fine otherwise. Look, Iâm not upset because you didnât ask me how I was doing. Iâm pissed because it sounded like you were assuming I was the weak city boy who wouldnât want to get his hands dirty.â
I motioned to the stable and we walked inside silently. Waru wasnât in there thankfully, so I tugged on Peteâs sleeve and guided him into one of the darkened corners. Cupping his face, I brushed my thumbs over his cheeks, following his cheekbone, and leaned in to kiss him slowly. A gentle brush of lips against his. A tease for me just as much as a promise to him. âI was inconsiderate and stupid.â Each of my sentences was punctuated with a soft kiss that begged him for forgiveness as much as I tried to tell him I liked him.
