“Pete,” I called as he walked away from me after lunch without so much as a word. “Pete,” I yelled louder when he ignored me again and jogged after him as he made his way back to the stable. I reached out for his arm and nearly smashed into him when he stopped dead in his tracks and spun to face me.

“What?” he spat out, his green eyes ablaze. In that moment, I didn’t know whether I wanted to kiss him until he forgave me or tell him to stop sulking like a big baby.

I did neither.

My ego needed to take a chill pill and I needed to find out exactly where I’d screwed up. “What did I say? I’m sorry, okay. I didn’t mean to upset you or offend you. I…” The dirt at my feet suddenly looked interesting, and I kicked at a lone pebble. “I’m not good at this. What did I say?”

“Early mornings and no fancy coffee?” His voice rose in frustration. “No sleeping on the ground.” He groaned and pulled his hat off, running his fingers through his hair. Blowing out a breath and looking up at the sky the same way I did when I was praying for some kinda patience. “Do you think I’m some kind of princess because I’m from the city? That I can’t handle it?” His shoulders sagged and the disappointment showed in his eyes. “I may not have done a muster before, but I can survive for a few days without luxuries if that’s what you’re worried about. If it’s a safety issue, fine. But if not, stop treating me like a… a—”

“A guest who’s under no obligation to come here and work? A guest who I assumed might wanna relax after coming off his horse yesterday?” Then it dawned on me. “A..." I hesitated. What did I call him? We weren't even close to being boyfriends or partners. I shook my head and got back on track. "A man who's important to me and who I still haven’t asked how he’s feeling. Fuck.” I rubbed my forehead. “I’m sorry. I’ve got shit on my mind and I didn’t even think to ask. How is your head? How are you feelin’?”

“Head’s a little sore to touch, but I’m fine otherwise. Look, I’m not upset because you didn’t ask me how I was doing. I’m pissed because it sounded like you were assuming I was the weak city boy who wouldn’t want to get his hands dirty.”

I motioned to the stable and we walked inside silently. Waru wasn’t in there thankfully, so I tugged on Pete’s sleeve and guided him into one of the darkened corners. Cupping his face, I brushed my thumbs over his cheeks, following his cheekbone, and leaned in to kiss him slowly. A gentle brush of lips against his. A tease for me just as much as a promise to him. “I was inconsiderate and stupid.” Each of my sentences was punctuated with a soft kiss that begged him for forgiveness as much as I tried to tell him I liked him.
