The phone went dead and Tom looked at the screen. One bar was not going to be enough from out here. Where to now? He looked over the rocks back to the bush and noticed it was thicker as it followed the contours of the river. Perhaps there would be another town along the river. He started making his way back down.

Chapter 18

Tom walked through the bush following the course of the river, grateful for the shade. He stopped and took a sip from the dead cop’s water bottle, careful to ration himself to only a couple of mouthfuls. As he replaced the cap, he heard a dog barking. He turned in a slight panic. Had to be a police dog, he thought. It wasn’t far behind. There was no way he could outrun a dog. Perhaps he could hide his scent in the stream and cross over to the other side, further downstream. But the stream would slow him down, allow them to get closer. They may have been on both sides of the river anyway.

What’s the point? How do I evade a dog? The dog will most likely be on a leash, which means I only have to outrun the cop holding the leash.

He turned and launched into a run.
