CHAPTER 9 - JANE AND BOB

“Here’s what’s going to happen,” said Trisha. “You’re going to come with me, and we’re going to pay Travis a visit.” She watched as Jane tensed up. “Just you try it. We can take you out before you’ve even had time to blink. But we’ll do our best not to damage you. Travis will want that for himself. Now move.”

She motioned for them to move forward. Jane and Bob started to move, swarmed by several guards, one of which was prodding her in the back with his weapon, before he suddenly fell to the ground. Dead.

Trisha looked at Jane and Bob accusingly. “Hey, don’t look at us,” said Bob, waving his hands. “You think we can pull a…” He glanced down at the wound on the man’s head, “…an arrow?

Trisha peered down to look at her fallen comrade, just as two more bodies fell. And then another three. Trisha raised her gun, looking around, unable to find a target. “SHOW YOURSELF!” she screamed into the air. The howling wind offered no response.

And then an arrow lodged itself in her throat. She gurgled blood before she dropped to the ground, her gun falling with a clatter.

More arrows continued to fall from the heavens, and the remaining marketers ran for cover, abandoning their captives. Jane and Bob looked around, trying to make sense of the chaos, and then they went for the fallen weapons, trying to pick up what they could.

“Don’t move.” The voice came from an older woman, holding a bow and arrow inches from Bob’s face.

Bob frowned. “You know, it would be nice to go five minutes without a weapon in my face.”

The woman moved closer to Bob. “I remember you.”

Jane stood in front of Bob. “Hey! He’s not with Travis.”

The woman instantly lowered her weapon. “I know you too. You’re Jane Benson.”

“Does confirmation earn me an arrow to the face?”

The woman looked about the street at the scattering marketers who hadn’t been pierced by arrowheads. “We’d better get off the streets. I haven’t bought us as much time as I’d like so we must move quickly. Come on.” She turned to go. Jane and Bob didn’t immediately follow. “You want to live? Come on.”

Bob and Jane realized they didn’t have any other options and agreed to go with their savior. They followed her through a narrow alleyway and up a fire escape into an old apartment building that had been boarded up, save for one panel which the woman went to put back in place. “Sorry about that.” Just before the board went up, she signaled to something beyond the window and turned to Jane and Bob. “I hope that was worth it. We can only do that little trick once.”

“Who are you?” asked Jane.

“My name is Mia and until recently, I was working for Travis as a spy.”

“Bullshit,” said Bob. “If you’re a spy, how come I’ve never seen you before?”

Mia rolled her eyes. “The whole point of spy work is that nobody knows who I am,”

“So, why help us?” asked Audrey.
