TANYA HUGGED HER shoulder bag to her for a moment. That had been too close. She had to be more careful—especially around Melissa. She’d forgotten to turn off her phone again. She’d left it on vibrate. Melissa had heard it buzzing inside the purse on the wooden step. Would she tell Davey?

Already in hot water with him, she hoped Mel kept her trap shut. Last night hadn’t gone well. Davey had planned a romantic dinner. She blamed all the booze she’d guzzled while tending bar. She hadn’t been hungry. She’d pushed her food around, spilled her wine and almost passed out in her plate.

At the memory of her failed attempt at seducing Davey when he carried her to bed, she felt her face heat. She hoped she hadn’t blown it with him. She had a good thing going here. A bar where she could drink all she wanted, a man who would do anything for her, a place to hide out and all the money she could steal—if she could get more chances. She couldn’t mess this up.

She looked into her open purse and saw the wad of money she’d taken last night. Looking around to make sure she was alone, she took it out, hoping there would be more than the four hundred dollars she’d estimated without counting this morning. She needed enough for a fresh start if things went south with Davey.

She’d begun to quickly tally what she’d gotten away with when she spotted a crumpled bill with writing on it. The word jumped out at her. THIEF. She stared at it for a full minute before she assured herself that it didn’t mean anything. But as she began to thumb through the rest of the money, she found more with the same word penned on them. Her heart began to pound.

Maybe it was someone’s idea of a joke. She wanted that to be the case, but it wasn’t funny. She thought of the two old men at the bar. They’d both been watching her like hawks. She realized they must have seen what she was doing. She’d thought they were just ogling her butt in those tight pants she’d been wearing.

Going through the money quickly, she pulled out all the bills with THIEF written on them in the same handwriting. There were seven total. She stared at them, considering. Throw them away? She couldn’t bring herself to do that. Even seven dollars in Vegas could make the difference between winning and losing.

Then an idea came to her. A surefire way to get rid of Melissa for good.
