Dusk wraps around the city of Warsaw like a mother swaddling her babe. The capital lies in darkness and shadows, with only a few lights burning in the approaching night. The view seems peaceful.
Ferdek, Tavius, and Wolfgang emerge from the forest and look down on their home.
Ferdek observes, âAll is calm.â
âThe storm is coming,â Tavius notes.
Wolfgang counters, âNo, the storm is already here.â He lifts his eyes to the far distance discerning German tank silhouettes on the plains north of town. Combat vehicles race back and forth along a line of soldiers and mobile artillery placements.
Tavius laments, âI didnât think the Germans would get here this quickly.â
Ferdek states, âThey figure to walk across Poland without facing any real resistance,â Ferdek states, âbury us beneath their Nazi heels, and then move as rapidly as possible toward France and Great Britain.â
Wolfgang barks, âThey donât know the courage of the Polish, Ferdek.â
âIt has nothing to do with courage, Wolfgang. Itâs all about weapons. The Germans have them, and we donât.â
âThen why are we fighting?â Tavius argues. âWhy have we chosen to die for nothing?â
Ferdek stoically admits, âWe canât save Poland. We canât stop the German army on Polish soil. It was too late, before the first shot. But we have an opportunity to make a difference. Admittedly it offers a small and improbable chance of stopping Germany before it crushes the rest of Europe.â
Wolfgangâs face soured like he had swallowed tainted meat. âThatâs a long shot, Ferdek.â
âItâs the only option we have.â
Tavius asks, âSo, youâre determined to go through with this, Ferdek?â
âI am. But each man must make his own decision. I would not force you to go further but look how far weâve come.â
Wolfgang grins. âYouâre certainly not going anywhere without us.â
