Dusk wraps around the city of Warsaw like a mother swaddling her babe. The capital lies in darkness and shadows, with only a few lights burning in the approaching night. The view seems peaceful.

Ferdek, Tavius, and Wolfgang emerge from the forest and look down on their home.

Ferdek observes, “All is calm.”

“The storm is coming,” Tavius notes.

Wolfgang counters, “No, the storm is already here.” He lifts his eyes to the far distance discerning German tank silhouettes on the plains north of town. Combat vehicles race back and forth along a line of soldiers and mobile artillery placements.

Tavius laments, “I didn’t think the Germans would get here this quickly.”

Ferdek states, “They figure to walk across Poland without facing any real resistance,” Ferdek states, “bury us beneath their Nazi heels, and then move as rapidly as possible toward France and Great Britain.”

Wolfgang barks, “They don’t know the courage of the Polish, Ferdek.”

“It has nothing to do with courage, Wolfgang. It’s all about weapons. The Germans have them, and we don’t.”

“Then why are we fighting?” Tavius argues. “Why have we chosen to die for nothing?”

Ferdek stoically admits, “We can’t save Poland. We can’t stop the German army on Polish soil. It was too late, before the first shot. But we have an opportunity to make a difference. Admittedly it offers a small and improbable chance of stopping Germany before it crushes the rest of Europe.”

Wolfgang’s face soured like he had swallowed tainted meat. “That’s a long shot, Ferdek.”

“It’s the only option we have.”

Tavius asks, “So, you’re determined to go through with this, Ferdek?”

“I am. But each man must make his own decision. I would not force you to go further but look how far we’ve come.”

Wolfgang grins. “You’re certainly not going anywhere without us.”
