For Coloradans, climbing all of the fourteeners is a rarified achievement that speaks to a person’s outdoor skills and commitment. The Colorado Mountain Club maintains a list of the people who have officially climbed all of them (1,890 as of 2019). Back east, there’s a similar club that, somewhat ironically, began as a way to introduce local hikers to less-visited peaks in the region. The venerable Appalachian Mountain Club, which has been promoting recreation in the White Mountains since 1876, maintains the Four Thousand Footer Club.

First launched in 1957, the 4K Club continues to inspire hikers to rise to the challenge. Membership to the club requires summiting all forty-eight peaks above 4,000 feet in the White Mountain National Forest. As of April 2019, 14,413 people are members. They have a winter version as well, for those folks willing to brave New Hampshire’s notoriously dark, cold winters and make their way above treeline between Winter Solstice and Spring Equinox. That list is much shorter, but still has more than 800 people on it.
