Chapter Six

The unrelenting ringing of the alarm shot Mike awake. Voula was already gone. He glanced at his phone and remembered she had early meetings this morning. Touching her pillow, he remembered just hours ago the sex they had, topped off with fooling around until she was too tired and too sore to do anymore. He rubbed his face, threw on his clothes from the night before, and walked into the kitchen. But before doing so, he made her bed. An ache moved through him, tightening the bed sheets. He missed her, and if she even missed him half as much, they’d never spend a night apart.

A note with a lipstick kiss sat on the table under a glass of orange juice in a stainless-steel cup. He drank it in one gulp; it was still cold. He feared what the note may say.

We couldn’t wake together, but the smile on my face is permanent.

It hurts. With other things. Just close the door behind you.

Or don’t leave at all. But then that would be weird, so forget that.

You’re hot. Have a good day. I had to blot my lips somewhere.

Whew. There he went again, teetering on the trust line.

Mike didn’t really have an office per se, a small enclave in his apartment, but he had his van and paid prime money for parking everywhere he went. His apartment was guy space. It felt empty, and he missed Voula so much so it burned deeper into this unknown. At any minute he could get a fuck off text or her ghosting him again. When will this stop? Suck it up. She was worth it, the way he could be himself with her, the way she didn’t pretend, the way she let him in. Don’t mess it up.

His phone rang nonstop while he was in the shower. He hoped it was Voula. Grabbing his towel, he ran barefoot, leaving footprints across his floor. Not Voula, but Vinnie. He sighed. Oh well. Even in the dead of New York winter, his best friend looked like his name, dark slicked back hair and always tanned. Vinnie worked for him, but first, they were neighborhood friends.

Mike threw his cell and towel on the bed and opened his closet. Jeans and a T-shirt kinda day. Borough Electric scrawled on the shirt’s back. He had thought of the name on a whim with the idea he would service all the boroughs, even Staten Island if need be, and he had a few times. But most of his clients lived in Manhattan proper, Astoria, and Bayside area, or whomever his parents gave his business card to. Every emergency he showed up, holidays and weekends, and so he made his name.

At times, Mike had to stay behind to manage the calls, the payments, the insurance, the schedules. He had three guys working for him, and they were invaluable. He helped pay for their health insurance. Yes, he did well, better than he let on. Manhattan. People in overpriced pre-war buildings paid a lot when something went haywire.
