She didn’t look nearly as excited as I’d hoped. In fact, she actually looked angry with me. But why? I was giving her everything she could have dreamed of. I was showing her that she could have the same life as she had back in the shit town, but with the funds and people behind her to make a real impact. It was on the tip of my tongue to say just that, but I stopped myself. The last thing I wanted was to make it all worse.

I felt deflated, but the last thing I wanted was for her to see that. I smiled down at her and shrugged. “It’s a lot. I got ahead of myself, this isn’t a small thing. I should have left it at the one surprise. How about we go back to the house and relax?” I waved at the building behind me. “This can be addressed another day. You’ve had a long day and I don’t want to stress you further.”

The fire I was sensing in her dark eyes began to fade and she nodded. I couldn’t get a smile from her, but at least she didn’t look pissed anymore. A win was a win, right?

“Thank you. I’d like that. I just need time to think.” Turning from me, she made her way back to the car and slid in. Her head was against the headrest and her eyes were closed by the time I joined her in the back.

“Take us home,” I said to the driver as I sunk into the seat with a sigh, closing my eyes as well. It was evident she wasn’t in the mood for further conversation. Within five minutes of leaving my newly acquired building, there were soft snores coming from her.
