Brockman arrived at the Chesapeake at six-thirty on the dot and was led by the headwaiter to a corner table where Roger sat alone, sipping a martini in the wood-paneled dimness. Roger rose and shook Brockman’s hand, and they sat down together. Brockman noticed that Roger’s complexion was pinkish, as if he’d been sunburned, and the lines in his face were more deeply engraved. They exchanged pleasantries and carefully avoided mention of CIA business, a prohibited topic of conversation in public places unless critically necessary.

The maitre d’ brought menus and they ordered their dinners, soft-shell crab for Roger and lobster for Brockman, as around them diners chatted and clinked silverware in the restaurant’s nautical decor. Roger told Brockman the latest Capitol Hill jokes and some gossip about a senator whose wife was a nymphomaniac. Presently the meal was served.

“I understand you were married while you were out of the country,” Roger said, slicing into his crab. “A Cuban girl, I believe someone told me. All is going well?”

“Reasonably well.”

“I must say that when I heard it, I was quite surprised. I somehow never thought you’d get married. You always seemed to be so much of a private person, so self-contained, like me.”

“I suppose we all have a capacity for romantic delusions.”

Roger smiled condescendingly. “Well, evidently you had that capacity, but I doubt if I still do. I don’t trust women any more, Brockman. There’s something reptilian about them.”

“I guess a couple of them bit you.”

“In a manner of speaking, that’s true, and it showed me that although women may be all right as human beings, as lovers they’re deceitful and treacherous. Maybe I shouldn’t be saying these things to you, since you’ve been so recently married—I wouldn’t want to cast a pall over your marriage. I’m sure your wife is a very fine girl.”

“Let’s hope so,” Brockman replied. “You probably know her—Miralia Guzman—recognize the name?”

“Oh, yes, I know about her and her brother, but I’ve never met them. We think very highly of them.”

“Julio told me he’d like to join us on a staff level.”

Roger pursed his lips. “Do you think he might be useful?”

“Yes, especially with Cuban émigrés. He’s an anti-Castro fanatic.”

“Unlike you.” Roger smiled cutely.

“I’m not a fanatic about anything.”

“That’s a benefit and a curse, I suppose. It means you have a cool head, but that you probably never really enjoy anything. These characteristics make for good intelligence agents, but failures at life. I understand, because I’m the same way.”

“I enjoy a few things,” Brockman said, recalling sexual interludes with Miralia.
