Rain started falling heavily, raising the water level in the drain alarmingly. The men packed all their gear and checked their weapons, ready for the off. Fred was still off colour, so Tony assigned Chalky to look after him; they would take the nearest targets. They secured their packs to the ladder to keep them out of the water, and Tony called the lads together for a final briefing.

‘In a minute we’ll go for it. Take your time, and keep low. I’m going first with Pete, then Fred next, and then Chalky. Chalky, you replace the grille. Be careful of the trench on the left, though I don’t think they’ll be too alert in this weather. Be bold, men. We own this place. Chalky, if you are back here first don’t wait any longer than 2 o’clock. That will give you time to get well clear in case something happens. Get rid of any spare Siestas. We don’t want the Argies finding any of those.’ He paused for comments, then continued, ‘Hopefully we will all meet up here and pick up Jim on the way out. If we are compromised, go straight to the border. All the best, men.’ He shook all their hands firmly.

They climbed out of the drain and lay close by, waiting for Chalky to give the signal that he had closed the grille. Rain was falling horizontally, driven by the strong wind, soaking them instantly. Visibility was zero, but it offered protection to the four men as they crawled forward to the first obstacle they would face that night.
