CHAPTER 46

The drive to Plain Dealing was uneventful and, as advertised, took slightly under two hours. We didn’t get away as early as I would have liked. I took all of the files to the bank and, after stopping for gas and along the way for lunch, we pulled into the town a bit before four. We found the Whispering Pines Nursing Home with no problem and, as expected, it was nestled among majestic southern pines towering over the facility.

As I was getting out of the car my cell phone rang. I didn’t want to answer it but looked down and saw it was Greg Bell. “Chief, what’s up?”

“Lonnie, I got some news for ya’. Yesterday I told you that we were going to go house to house today to find that black SUV.”

“Did you find him?”

“We sure as shit did but I gotta tell ya’ it’s been a helluva day here. We found where the vehicle was and wound up in a shoot-out. One of our men was killed as were two of theirs, but Lonnie, we got ‘em.”

“And they admitted to killing my parents?”

“Yes and no. The guy that was actually driving the SUV was killed in the shootout along with his brother. He had a rap sheet a mile long. He lived there with his brother, father, two friends, plus his girlfriend and two little kids. Can you imagine having your kids around those characters - eight of ‘em living under one roof. What the hell’s the world coming to?”

“So how do you know that it was these guys that killed my parents - and why would they do that?”

“Once we got ‘em at the station the old man talked. He said his son was offered ten grand to take out your parents by some bald guy. He didn’t know his name. They’d been watching Bob and Martha and were going to shoot them at their home but when they saw ‘em drive into town they figured they might be able to get away with it being an automobile accident and all. He said none of the rest of ‘em had anything to do with it.”

I pictured my parents being loaded onto the gurney recently and thought of the repercussions of what I’d been told. “I’m glad you got them Chief but it won’t bring my parents back.”

“No, but I knew you’d want to know. Rest assured these guys won’t be hurtin’ nobody else for a long time.”

I hung up with Bell and repeated what he’d told me to Fey. I know that Bell had intended to ease my mind with his call but I didn’t feel any better after having been given that information. Fey, sensing this, brought my mind back to the purpose of our trip.

“I’m sorry Lonnie that you’ve had to go through so much but today might turn out a lot better. How are you going to find out if your Mom is here?”

I shut the car door and headed for the facility. “I’m really not sure.
