No longer in the mood for any sort of company, I didnât call Gus. Instead, I made my way out onto the street and wandered around, looking at the multitude of coffee shops and graffiti-filled alleyways until I found myself at a tram station. Iâd already researched them and knew they were wheelchair-friendly, with lowered platforms. As I sat waiting, I pulled my phone out, scrolling through the contacts list until I found Rykerâs name.
I hovered my finger over the connect button and tried to come up with a plausible reason to call him. I could ask about the farm. Or ask where heâd been this morning. But I was worried I might blurt out the fact I just wanted to hear his voice. I wanted to unload my shitty day on someone. Not just anyone. Him. Iâd almost convinced myself when the tram trundled up. I put my phone away and got on.
A big part of me had been disappointed when he hadnât been there to say goodbye this morning. Iâd missed him. How could I have missed someone I only saw yesterday? The same someone Iâd hated just a couple of weeks ago? Somewhere along the way, I seemed to have developed a case of feelings.
I found the hotel without a hitch, and the sun was beginning to sink outside the floor-to-ceiling window by the time I made it to my room. I briefly noted the interior was on the fancy side with a huge bed and modern-looking bathroom, but I couldnât bring myself to care or get excited about the luxury.
Instead, I stayed in the spacious shower for an obnoxiously long time, shaving my legs and soaping my hair and generally trying to clean away the grime of the day. It didnât make much difference, though. My grey mood didnât lift, nor could I wash away the insults that seemed to follow me from the gallery.
Once dry, I bundled myself into bed, called room service, and picked a movie from the pay-per-view menu. The magazine could pay for that one.
Food came, I ate. The movie rolled, and I watched. None of it made any sort of impact. All I could think about was talking to Ryker. I grabbed my phone, and before I could chicken out, I called him. It went to voicemail, and not caring if it looked desperate, I hung up and rang again, rationalising that the farm was a big place and he may not have been close enough to his phone to answer the first time.
âCome on,â I whispered. âPlease answer.â I needed to hear his voice. But it rang out again, and I dropped the phone on my bed. Exhaustion and disappointment threatened to drag me under. This day just needed to end. I was out minutes after my head hit the pillow.
Thumping noises from the hallway woke me from a deep sleep. My eyes were heavy, my arms uncoordinated as I sat up and tried to work out where the hell I was.
