“So,” Elijah says as we eventually break away from the other guys and head toward the elevators. “You gonna tell me what happened between you two?”

I scrub the back of my neck. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Don’t even try to lie, man,” Elijah says with an easy grin. “I caught that look back there.” He nods toward the lobby. “Not to mention the way you were all…”

He stops talking to hover all over me like an idiot, putting a hand to my back, fawning like a lovesick puppy until I shove him away with an exasperated laugh. “Shut up.”

Elijah shrugs, holding his hands up in mock defense. “Just calling it like I see it. And I’ve gotta say…” He pulls back to eye me with open suspicion. “I’ve never seen you like that before.”

I frown, looking away as we head into the next available elevator.

I can’t pretend that I don’t know what he’s talking about, but I can’t explain it either. I’m not that guy. I’ve never been some doting, overprotective, alpha dude who makes a show out of claiming his girl.

But that’s totally what I did. I took one look at the other guys in the lobby and put a hand on her back in a silent back off, she’s mine move. I can’t even deny that’s what it was because those were the exact words that went through my mind when I touched her.

Back off. She’s mine.

I let out a loud exhale.

And was I hovering? Maybe.

Okay, definitely. But she’s small and this city is big and—

Ah crap. What the hell is happening to me?

I rub my eyes. It’s exhaustion, that’s all. Even with that nap in the train, I’m all out of sorts. Ever since I woke to find Celia sleeping in my arms like a freakin’ fairytale princess come to life, all sweet and innocent and way too pretty for the real world and—

And yeah. I just compared Celia to a freakin’ fairytale princess, so okay. Wow. “This is bad.”

I didn’t actually mean to say it aloud, but I get a hand on the shoulder along with Elijah’s laughter in response.

“Dude, what happened?” he asks.

I shake my head and drop my hand. “I have no idea.”

Which is a lie, of course. I kissed her. That’s what happened. I kissed Celia Kennedy.

And all I can think about is doing it again. It’s all I thought about as we took turns getting changed at the motel this morning. It was all I thought about on the walk to the train station.

Hell, I dreamt about it on the train.

But that's not the worst part. Oh no. The worst part is, all these daydreams and fantasies? They weren’t just about kissing. It was more. It was so much more. It was staying up late with her every night, even if it’s just talking on the phone. It was visions of being able to hold Celia in my arms like that anytime I wanted. It was memories of making her laugh and the look in her eyes when she told me her secrets.
