âSo,â Elijah says as we eventually break away from the other guys and head toward the elevators. âYou gonna tell me what happened between you two?â
I scrub the back of my neck. âI donât know what you mean.â
âDonât even try to lie, man,â Elijah says with an easy grin. âI caught that look back there.â He nods toward the lobby. âNot to mention the way you were allâ¦â
He stops talking to hover all over me like an idiot, putting a hand to my back, fawning like a lovesick puppy until I shove him away with an exasperated laugh. âShut up.â
Elijah shrugs, holding his hands up in mock defense. âJust calling it like I see it. And Iâve gotta sayâ¦â He pulls back to eye me with open suspicion. âIâve never seen you like that before.â
I frown, looking away as we head into the next available elevator.
I canât pretend that I donât know what heâs talking about, but I canât explain it either. Iâm not that guy. Iâve never been some doting, overprotective, alpha dude who makes a show out of claiming his girl.
But thatâs totally what I did. I took one look at the other guys in the lobby and put a hand on her back in a silent back off, sheâs mine move. I canât even deny thatâs what it was because those were the exact words that went through my mind when I touched her.
Back off. Sheâs mine.
I let out a loud exhale.
And was I hovering? Maybe.
Okay, definitely. But sheâs small and this city is big andâ
Ah crap. What the hell is happening to me?
I rub my eyes. Itâs exhaustion, thatâs all. Even with that nap in the train, Iâm all out of sorts. Ever since I woke to find Celia sleeping in my arms like a freakinâ fairytale princess come to life, all sweet and innocent and way too pretty for the real world andâ
And yeah. I just compared Celia to a freakinâ fairytale princess, so okay. Wow. âThis is bad.â
I didnât actually mean to say it aloud, but I get a hand on the shoulder along with Elijahâs laughter in response.
âDude, what happened?â he asks.
I shake my head and drop my hand. âI have no idea.â
Which is a lie, of course. I kissed her. Thatâs what happened. I kissed Celia Kennedy.
And all I can think about is doing it again. Itâs all I thought about as we took turns getting changed at the motel this morning. It was all I thought about on the walk to the train station.
Hell, I dreamt about it on the train.
But that's not the worst part. Oh no. The worst part is, all these daydreams and fantasies? They werenât just about kissing. It was more. It was so much more. It was staying up late with her every night, even if itâs just talking on the phone. It was visions of being able to hold Celia in my arms like that anytime I wanted. It was memories of making her laugh and the look in her eyes when she told me her secrets.
