I couldnât believe it. When Iâd come to Ohana Bay this morning, I thought for the first time in a week I could have a peaceful moment out on the water without worrying about running into her. Ohana Hotel and the grounds were nestled on a cove surrounded by cliffs and large rocks. Though law permitted the public to access the shoreline, Iâd thought it was pretty much impossible to reach it without also stepping on to privately owned land.
My land.
So, when Iâd told Jasmine she wasnât allowed here anymore, Iâd felt pretty secure that when I arrived here this morning to surf in peace before all the tourists woke up, I wouldnât run into her.
But as I waxed my board, checking out the horizon and analyzing the conditions, I noticed two people on Slinky, the reef break. At first I thought Iâd avoid the early risers and looked to the point break when something on my inner radar beeped. Intuitive alarm bells ringing. I looked back, squinted my eyes and I swore one of those people was Jasmine.
How could she possibly be here? She couldnât be. It must be a mirage, Iâd thought. But then, as I watched and over waxed my board in one vertical line for five minutes straight, I saw her pop up, her long black hair whipping behind her as she tamed a magnificent wall of water. The moves, the confidence, right down the elegance in the way she was forced high in the air at the end of her ride and somehow looked like a ballerina⦠for sure. It was her.
After rising from the white-water rapids looking like a mermaid that had just been dramatically birthed from the ocean, she paddled her board closer to shore rather than paddle back out. She picked up her board when she reached shallower water but stared down at the water and stopped short of the shoreline. Jasmine was looking back out on the horizon. I stalked over and my feet struck the sand like thunder, my body taken over by the spirit of a pouncing tiger.
âWhat the hell are you doing here?â
Jasmineâs head turned and though she should have been as surprised to see me as I was her, her face wasnât the least bit startled. Sheâd expected me. Sheâd wanted this. She knew she would see me. She did this to defy me.
She hadnât answered my question, so I repeated, âWhat the hell are you doing on this beach, Jasmine? Youâre trespassing.â
She dug her board into the sand as much as possible, staking a claim. âIâm not. Weâve been over this. Any land BELOW the highest wave line.â
She hugged her surfboard with one arm and put her free hand on her hip. Her wet breasts dared me to tell her no, and her nipples, pebbled under her thin bikini top, stood as backup. She might have gotten away with it, with a lesser man.
âNice to know you were listening. What you didnât seem to
