Friday morning dawned with Victoria sitting on the front porch swing, a cup of coffee in one hand and her journal closed in her lap. She was only a day older than she was yesterday but somehow officially turning forty-five felt like a Rubicon she’d crossed into another part of her life. Now when she thought about her age, she was closer to fifty than forty.

Her business was a resounding success; happy employees, happy clients and a decent income made it hard to argue. Her apartment, decorated in modern shades and styles was one most people would be envious of. She leased a new luxury car every few years. By all accounts, she was every bit the success story her mother had raised her to be.

But as the sun continued its ascension on the first day of the next chapter of her life, she couldn’t help but feel like something was missing. Her sister always told her she’d regret not having kids, that being the fun aunt would eventually get old. But that wasn’t it. She wasn’t suddenly pining to be a mother. Auntie Vic was a title she wore proudly, and she still had no interest in kids of her own.

Going back to her first love of art over the past week was supposed to help fill that empty space she had inside. And while she enjoyed herself immensely the past few days, the emptiness had only grown deeper. The love of creating art had never truly left her so finding it again brought a sense of peace, but she was beginning to wonder if sleeping with Aaron might not have been the best idea. It seemed that the emptiness wasn’t as easily filled with other things since their hot as hell encounter.

The pinprick of that missing piece stabbed at her until she heard the front door open.

Wearing a dark gray t-shirt and a pair of faded jeans, with a chestnut brown acoustic guitar across his body, Aaron walked out to the porch and put his coffee on the railing. “Good morning,” he said as he pulled over one of the chairs and sat near her.

“Morning,” she said, suddenly lighter, as if she could float up and out of the swing. “Are you going to play for me?”

After he adjusted the guitar on his leg, he winked at her and began to strum. Then, in the clearest, most beautiful voice she’d ever heard, Aaron sang her the birthday song while she sat on the swing and melted into a puddle. Her belly fluttered and her heart was full to bursting with so many feelings; surprise, gratitude, joy. Clasping her hands over her smiling mouth, she watched and listened as he sang only for her.

His body was relaxed, his eyes almost closed and when he finished singing, he sat with his arm draped over the body of the guitar. “Happy birthday, Victoria.”

Her throat was thick with emotion, but she managed to squeak out two words. “Thank you.”

After taking a quick sip of his coffee, he said, “But I’m not done yet.
