Chapter Nineteen

Macy pulled into her driveway and remained in her vehicle. Leaning back against the seat, she closed her eyes to deliberate on the ordeal of having to rehash her life. Combat would have been more appealing. She jerked and reached for her gun inside her jacket on the passenger’s seat when someone knocked on her window. Turning she saw Dag, shoved her pistol back, and opened the door, taking a deep breath.

“Are you alright?” he asked.

“I’m fine,” she replied, knowing she really wasn’t. “It’s been a long day and I’m tired.” Grabbing the jacket from the seat next to her, Macy exited her vehicle. She’d retrieve her weapons bag later.

“Is there anything I can do to make the remainder of your day more enjoyable?” he said, grinning while stroking Macy’s arm.

She laughed. “Right now, all I want is a glass of bourbon.” She thought for a moment, and continued, “Care to join me?”

“You’re inviting me in?”

“We could sit on the porch if you’d rather,” she teased.

“Let’s go inside,” he replied, grinning and followed her into the house.

Once in the kitchen Macy pulled out two glasses. “Is bourbon okay or would you prefer something else? I have an 18-year single malt Scotch that’s really good, or if you’d rather, I have beer and wine.”

“Whatever you’re having, although the Scotch sounds tempting. Maybe another time.”

Macy poured the bourbon and handed Dag his glass. She grabbed hers and the bottle and they moved into the living room and sat.

“So, do you want to tell me about your day? I’m not sure if you look exhausted, depressed, or angry.”

Macy chuckled. “All of the above and I really don’t want to think or talk about it.”

“Very well,” he said, quietly, and nodded. “But I’m a really good listener, if you ever need to talk someone.”

Macy smiled and readjusted her seat to get more comfortable. How wonderful it was to have someone care enough to listen to her problems. If she could only tell Dag what was bothering her, but she couldn’t. She sighed. “How was your day?” she finally asked trying to sound more upbeat.

“Normal, I guess. Got a call from my VP about an insurance claim we’d made against a cargo ship that went aground off the coast of South Africa a couple of months ago.”

“Did you lose your merchandise?”

“Yes and no. The cargo was intact, but it took several more weeks than we’d anticipated to get it to the customer, who decided he couldn’t wait and refused to accept delivery. Timing is everything and although we anticipate delays, usually due to weather, and build that into our timeline, we’d still exceeded our delivery date.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” Macy said.

“It’s neither here nor there. Just another day in the business world and one reason we carry extensive insurance and hire superior legal representation.”

Macy nodded.

“And this is extremely boring to you, I imagine.”

“No, not at all.” Noticing Dag’s empty glass, she asked, “Would you like some more?”

Dag put his glass down on the coffee table.
