Chapter Eleven
Dianaâs heartbeat tripped so quickly through her veins it felt as if sheâd run all the way from London instead of through a garden and then over the back lawn of the Duke of Winthropâs country estate. Her limp had slowed their escape slightly, but Twinsfield hadnât seemed to mind. If he wished to go faster, he merely picked her up in his arms and jogged along for a bit before setting her back onto her feet. By the time they once more reached the wildflower meadow where she and Augustus began the evening, she was well and truly winded but oh so exhilarated.
âThat was⦠incredible!â She pressed a hand to her chest as she fought to take deep breaths to help regulate her breathing.
âWhat, stealing the ruby, what we did in the library, or the flight from the house?â Augustus waggled his eyebrows then laughed when she couldnât help but giggle.
âAll of it?â The coolness of the gold chain laid against her skin and between her breastsâa constant reminder she wore an extremely valuable ruby on her person. Well, she assumed that it was, for no one gave ordinary jewels their own name or title.
âGod, but itâs been a lovely night, and one I sorely needed.â
That sobered her more than falling into a cold lake. âDo you, ah, think this will be our last adventure or even night together?â After that session of kissing in the dukeâs library, the only thought running through her brain was sharing the ultimate intimacy with him, as sheâd hinted at during that time.
âI suppose that largely depends on what becomes of the diamonds.â Worry creased his brow. The faint illumination from the moonlight betrayed his anxiety about his immediate future.
âAugustus?â
âHmm?â The look in his eyes sent a throb of blatant need between her thighs. Was he even aware he hadnât masked his emotions? âIf this is indeed our last night together, I donât wish to waste it.â Would her next words make her seem desperate? If so, did she particularly care? âI⦠After that interlude in the library, Iâ¦â Just say it, Di! âI absolutely want to feel your body against mine without clothing. This, uh, might be the only time Iâll know what it feels like to have a man desire me.â
A low-pitched growl emanated from him. âAh, sweeting. If only you could see yourself as I see you.â The whispered words were almost too low for her to catch, and combined with the unexpected endearment, her heart did an odd squeeze. But there was no time for further conversation, for the baron pulled her into his arms and then promptly set out to apparently kiss her senseless. A delicious prospect, indeed, and one she heartily agreed with.
Every movement over her lips heightened her need. Why was kissing him so lovely? And more than that, why did she enjoy kissing more now than she had years ago with her fiancé? Perhaps it didnât matter. Diana slipped her hands up his chest and held onto his shoulders as she kissed him back.
