Boost Your “Mental Homework” Time

If you’re finding it more and more difficult to remember things or you want to boost your memory power, consider the following tips and work them into your routines.

Determine your best biological time of day. Are you sharper in the early morning or late at night? Use these personal peak times for reading, paperwork, and mind games.

Use your time wisely. Find spare moments each day for mental exercise. I studied countless hours but in bits of time by carrying around summary cards and pages of my notes—a moment here and a moment there. You’ll find more of these moments if you watch for them and simplify your routines and tasks. I used spare moments to write about fifty books.

For big learning projects, break them down into small parts. Notice how books are divided into chapters. If you read one chapter each day, you’ll soon complete the whole book.

Have organized places to read and study, with a comfortable chair and good lighting. Declutter these “thinking” areas.

Take short breaks every twenty to thirty minutes. Walk around, stretch, get something to drink, or step outside for some fresh air. This helps you stay alert.

Keep clocks and calendars in the rooms where you spend the most time.

Keep a smartphone or notebook handy to keep track of names, phone numbers, appointments, lists, errands, addresses and directions, and so on.

It’s easy to lose track of time. Set alarms for important things you need to do. Put sticky notes around the house as reminders to do important things you might forget.

If you want to remember something, say it aloud—several times. I often do this when I’m driving alone in the car.

Before going to bed, decide on the three most important tasks for the next day and write them down. Doing so will get each new day off to a good start.

Make mental homework a priority.
