Along with his government-issued Springfield rifle and sidearm, Hector also now has one of those George S. Patton-designed cavalry sabers and a big Bowie of his own purchase he hides in a sheath in his right boot. In his left, like Armand Ellroy, Hector also hides a silver flask, his filled with single-malt whisky.

He’s met a few young Turks in addition to Armand—a couple of Ohioans, a skinny fella named Cleon David Corzilius and huskier young one from the same obscure city in southwestern Ohio, a young man called Frank Weygandt.

Hector also comes to know a kindred spirit of sorts, a one-eyed aspiring author still younger than himself, who, like Hector, has lied about his age and signed on at the tender age of fourteen to chase Mexican bandits.

This fellow traveler—“Brett Halliday”—was born in Chicago, but raised mostly in Texas.

But before he and Halliday can get down to really talking about the craft of writing—in an illustration to Hector of just how potent Valeria and Beau’s threats were to report Hector’s actual age to authorities—Pershing and company learn Halliday’s true name and age.

They promptly bounce Brett, or really, David Dresser, from service.

Just days out of Texas, an annoyed Pershing sends the young Halliday back across the border to El Paso with a small escort.
