‘We can keep talking about it then, though, can’t we?’ persisted Astrid. ‘I mean, you wouldn’t want to stop us thinking, would you?’

Miss Dove gritted her teeth. ‘Oh, no. That’s the last thing I’d ever want to do. I’d never want to stop you thinking.’

Scoop out my brain

That’s what she’d said – she’d never want to stop them thinking. And somehow, from the moment they were back in their seats, Philip found that he couldn’t help it. All the tiny wheels inside his head were still spinning nicely, just the way she’d said she wanted them.

He couldn’t help it. He put up his hand.

Miss Dove pretended that she hadn’t seen.

Philip coughed politely.

Miss Dove pretended that she hadn’t heard.

Astrid came to the rescue. ‘Miss Dove! Miss Dove! Philip has had another thought!’

Miss Dove gave up. Sighing, she said, ‘Yes, Philip?’

‘What I thought,’ said Philip, ‘is that we can’t be absolutely sure that anybody’s brain really belongs to them.’

Miss Dove said as calmly as she could, ‘I think we can, Philip, because our brains are safely inside our heads.’

‘But doctors can do almost anything now,’ said Philip. ‘So how do I know for sure that someone didn’t creep into my bedroom in the middle of the night, give me an injection so I didn’t feel a thing, then very carefully scoop out my brain, and put it into someone else’s head?’

Miss Dove said, ‘Philip, I really do not think that we can waste any more class time talking about an idea as silly as this.’

‘It isn’t silly,’ Astrid argued. ‘It’s interesting. I mean, after it happened, which person would be Philip?’

Miss Dove clapped a hand to her head. ‘Astrid, it isn’t going to happen ’
