HARKER CHUCKLED, WATCHING the young woman hurry toward the woods. Her striped dress was rumpled but the bright pattern still stood out in the morning sun.
She was cute when she got embarrassed, and he knew he wouldnât be able to resist teasing her on this trip, at least a little.
He wondered what she would do if he kissed her again. Perhaps they were going to Houston to get an annulment, but a kiss now and then wouldnât do any harm. After her enthusiastic embrace at the altar, he couldnât blame himself for wanting another kiss.
The cowboy shook his head. No, kissing is what had gotten him into this mess, and as soon as he had his annulment, heâd put Olga on a train back to her family and be on his way.
Moving to his saddlebags, Harker pulled out his coffee pot. Heâd get a nice brew going then put Olga on Scout and set out toward the Ferry station. Again the cowboy shook his head. Olga must have come through the station when she arrived in Needful. Heâd heard that all four girls and their father had arrived by stage, making a special trip and an evening run to do so.
Pouring water from his canteen into the pot, Harker stoked the fire back to life and sat the pot on a rock. It was high time they got to the next town and got on with the business at hand.
The rustle of grass told him that Olga was coming back and he looked up smiling at her slightly bedraggled appearance. The woman dressed so pretty all the time it felt good to know that she wasnât perfect all the time.
âIs that coffee I smell?â Olga smoothed her dress coming to a stop before the fire.
âCominâ right up,â Harker grinned.
âYou do know your way around a campfire.â Olga smiled, and it did something funny to his heart. For some reason, her simple praise hit Harker like a kick from a mule, and a big smile spread across his face.
âIâve been cookinâ over an open fire most of my life,â he said, his chest swelling a little. âItâs second nature.â
âWell, letâs just see how the coffee comes out before I pass judgment.â Olgaâs eyes sparkled teasing in the bright light of day.
Harker poured her a cup, placing it in her small hands. âSorry, thereâs no cream or sugar.â
âThatâs alright,â Olga grinned. âI stopped putting those in my coffee ages ago.â She lifted the cup to her lips and grimaced.
âThat bad huh?â Harkerâs heart fell.
âNo, strong and hot, but good.â She offered him another smile. âI often stay up late into the night sewing,â she confided. âI tend to drink whateverâs left in the pot when everyone has gone to bed.â
âDrink up anâ weâll hit the road,â Harker grinned, that feeling of worth filling him again. She liked his coffee. Now that was something.
A short half-hour later, Harker helped Olga onto Scoutâs back. The chestnut cowpony was taller than Bandit, and she grasped the manâs shoulders, steadying herself when he lifted her high.
