Chapter Nineteen

Lennox

Massaging my cheeks, I started to wonder if this smile might be permanent.

I couldn’t turn it off if I tried. I was just so proud of Emersyn. She’d done it. She’d played her little heart out today. There was no way Coach Johnson could deny she was the all-star player I’d promised.

He hadn’t given me the verdict yet, but I was convinced Em had earned her spot on the starting lineup. Which was why I was striding to his office right now with so much pep in my step.

After a brief knock on Coach Johnson’s open door, he waved me in. I waited for him to finish his phone call. As soon as he disconnected, I started to speak, but I didn’t even get a word out before he held up his hand.

“Spare me the spiel, Grey. You were right about Keene. Your girl earned her spot.”

My heart grew hands and hi-fived itself in my chest! “Have you broken the news to her yet?”

“No, I figured you might want that job.”

He thought right. “I’d be happy to.”

“I hope she knows how lucky she is to have someone like you in her corner.”

“She does,” I replied, pride practically bubbling out my ears.

Coach Johnson let a rare smirk grace his lips. “Tell Keene to keep it up. If she keeps playing like that, she’ll have her pick of colleges.”

I left his office with my heart twice as big as when I entered it. And if I’d thought my dopey grin was ridiculous before, now it was downright obscene. My smile was so wide it was threatening to split my giddy face in two. But not before I told Em the good news.

I found her outside the locker rooms chatting with some of her teammates.

When she spotted me her eyes grew, filling with questions. Even though the news was good, I jutted my chin away from the group, selfishly wanting Emersyn to myself when I told her what Coach Johnson said.

She followed me up the tunnel and back out to the field, anticipation wafting off her like perfume. By the time we reached the sidelines she snapped. “I can’t take it anymore. What did Johnson say?”

I took a few more steps and sat down on the bench, patting the spot beside me. Em sank down, her eyes full of worry as her lower lip began to tremble. “It wasn’t enough, was it?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to. You brought me out to the bench. That’s like the same thing as sending an old dog ‘to live on a farm.’”

“Actually, I brought you out here so you could say your farewells to this here bench, since you won’t be spending any time on it after the way you played today.”

Her blue eyes flashed to mine, locking on like tractor beams as she searched for the truth. “Are you serious?”

“Yep. You did it. Just like I knew you could.”

“Omigod!” Emersyn shot to her feet, howling like a maniac before she bowled me over with an enthusiastic hug.
