Chapter Nineteen
Lennox
Massaging my cheeks, I started to wonder if this smile might be permanent.
I couldnât turn it off if I tried. I was just so proud of Emersyn. Sheâd done it. Sheâd played her little heart out today. There was no way Coach Johnson could deny she was the all-star player Iâd promised.
He hadnât given me the verdict yet, but I was convinced Em had earned her spot on the starting lineup. Which was why I was striding to his office right now with so much pep in my step.
After a brief knock on Coach Johnsonâs open door, he waved me in. I waited for him to finish his phone call. As soon as he disconnected, I started to speak, but I didnât even get a word out before he held up his hand.
âSpare me the spiel, Grey. You were right about Keene. Your girl earned her spot.â
My heart grew hands and hi-fived itself in my chest! âHave you broken the news to her yet?â
âNo, I figured you might want that job.â
He thought right. âIâd be happy to.â
âI hope she knows how lucky she is to have someone like you in her corner.â
âShe does,â I replied, pride practically bubbling out my ears.
Coach Johnson let a rare smirk grace his lips. âTell Keene to keep it up. If she keeps playing like that, sheâll have her pick of colleges.â
I left his office with my heart twice as big as when I entered it. And if Iâd thought my dopey grin was ridiculous before, now it was downright obscene. My smile was so wide it was threatening to split my giddy face in two. But not before I told Em the good news.
I found her outside the locker rooms chatting with some of her teammates.
When she spotted me her eyes grew, filling with questions. Even though the news was good, I jutted my chin away from the group, selfishly wanting Emersyn to myself when I told her what Coach Johnson said.
She followed me up the tunnel and back out to the field, anticipation wafting off her like perfume. By the time we reached the sidelines she snapped. âI canât take it anymore. What did Johnson say?â
I took a few more steps and sat down on the bench, patting the spot beside me. Em sank down, her eyes full of worry as her lower lip began to tremble. âIt wasnât enough, was it?â
âI didnât say that.â
âYou didnât have to. You brought me out to the bench. Thatâs like the same thing as sending an old dog âto live on a farm.ââ
âActually, I brought you out here so you could say your farewells to this here bench, since you wonât be spending any time on it after the way you played today.â
Her blue eyes flashed to mine, locking on like tractor beams as she searched for the truth. âAre you serious?â
âYep. You did it. Just like I knew you could.â
âOmigod!â Emersyn shot to her feet, howling like a maniac before she bowled me over with an enthusiastic hug.
