Recording and Playing Macros

The first step down this geeky programming trail is as easy as recording a voice memo on your iPhone. The basic steps are: Turn on the recorder—a simple menu command as shown in Figure 16-1. Do something. Turn off the recorder.

Figure 16-1. You can start and stop the macro recorder from the Tools menu. After you begin recording, the command highlighted here turns into a Stop Recording command.

Suppose you always add an address block at the top of your spreadsheets: company, street, city, and so forth. Instead of typing those same details over and over, you decide to create a macro to do the job with a single keystroke.

Here’s a walk through that creates a letterhead for the Critter Clipper Dog Grooming company.

Go to Tools→Macro→Record New Macro.

The Record Macro box appears, which, as you can see in Figure 16-2, is mercifully simple—just one menu and three text boxes.
