Frankie batted her eyelids open and squinted at the photo-covered wall in front of her. Where was she? It looked like her bedroom . . . Her pillow shifted under her and she sat up, a bolt of pain going through her head. She wiped a line of drool off her cheek.
Dylan stirred again and yawned. âYou drooled on me,â she said, opening her eyes to look at Frankie. Was she smirking?
The realization that sheâd been sleeping on Dylan made her want to bolt like a rabbit. âI was comfortable,â Frankie said. âAlthough my arm went numb. Sorry about the drool.â
Dylan sat up and groaned. âWhat time is it? I didnât mean to fall asleep.â
âIâm not sure.â Despite the nap, Frankieâs head still pounded. And now there was a stale taste in her mouth and growing panic in her chest. âI need water.â
She left the room before Dylan could say anything, wanting time to think and recover from . . . whatever had just happened.
In the kitchen, she picked up her glass of water from earlier. She didnât have any painkillers with her, so water would have to suffice for now.
The floor above her head creaked as Dylan presumably got up. Frankie kept her eyes trained out the window over the sink as she drank her water, searching for answers in the backyard. She and Dylan had just kissed for the first time, and her feelings were like whirlpools, swirling so fast that Frankie couldnât grasp them.
She heard Dylan come down the stairs. âAre you okay?â Dylan asked quietly from behind her.
Frankie continued staring straight ahead. She thought about lying, about saying yes, but she told the truth. âI donât know.â It felt amazing to have Dylan touch her and hold her like sheâd always imagined. They didnât know each other as well as they used to, but that was an opportunity more than anything.
But now that she had what sheâd been longing for, it scared her. Sheâd loved Dylan more than anyone else in her life, and that had burned her. Her wildest dreams were coming true, and that meant something horrible must be coming. If she got too close to Dylan now, maybe that horrible thing would be leaving her. Again.
But she had never planned on staying.
Dylan hadnât responded, so Frankie said, âI always wanted something like that to happen, but . . . I wasnât expecting it now. I donât know what it means, or what I want it to mean.â
Dylan cleared her throat and said, âOkay.â After a beat of silence, she added, âIâm going to go. If you need me or want to talk . . . you know where to find me.â
A robin flew into the tree in the backyard, and Frankie kept her eyes on it. On its bright red belly, the way it flicked its tail feathers, the way it hopped on the bark.
Although she heard Dylan go to the front room, she couldnât bring herself to move. Her feet were rooted
