Chapter Nine
It was right about the time that June realized how lucky she had been in avoiding Loganeâs goons up until now that the luck started to run out. Using what little bit of spatial awareness of the place she had picked up so far, along with an assist from the sort-of-but-not-quite-accurate map, she got the impression that they were heading in the general direction of the far end of the complex from where she had entered at the sub docks. They were in an area with the signage âMonsters of the Eocene,â but where most of the tanks seemed to not have anything in them. June was just trying to remember whether or not she knew what âthe Eoceneâ was supposed to be when they heard voices approaching them from ahead.
âCrap,â Mark said as he heard them. âWe need to go back.â Except before they could even turn around, they started to hear shouts from that direction as well.
âPlease tell me you know some other way around here,â June said.
âNo, I donât⦠wait. Maybe I do. I donât think youâll like it though.â
âAt this point, whether or not I like it isnât going to factor much into my decisions. Just lead the way.â
He took her hand and pulled her to an innocuous door nearby that, like so many others, opened for them easily when it probably shouldnât have. There were more halls here, but most notably there was a metal staircase leading both up and down. Mark paused at the downward stairs for a moment like he were considering something, then instead led June upward. June didnât question him, instead just following him up approximately four stories of stairs. June had thought she was in pretty good shape, but by the time they made it to where they were going she was out of breath. Mark seemed even worse off. June supposed he hadnât really had a need to keep toned when all he had to do most days was watch over a mostly-empty complex. There were still more stairs heading up, but at this level there was a landing and another door, which he led her through. After they were down another hall and through another entryway, they were finally at where June assumed he had been leading her the entire time.
She recognized the place they were as being very similar to the room they had seen on the security monitors where Loganeâs people had fed the workers to the megalodon, although this room wasnât nearly as huge as that one. They were above the water tank with a couple of walkways going over it, but whatever was supposed to be in this particular water must have been much smaller than the megalodon.
âAlright, so where do we go from here?â she asked.
âThereâs a tunnel we can go through,â Mark said. âItâs not something most people would think about using, so itâs our best bet to avoid Caslaw and the rest of the mercs.â
June looked around, but she didnât see anything along the walls of the room that looked like it might be the entrance of a tunnel.
