CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

Eylin

Hella and I stopped in front of the rubble of Big Ben.

"Where is he?" I asked.

"Rupert said he'll be here, so he will."

I glanced at the debris. "I thought they were going to fix that."

"The humans tried, but it crumbled again." Hella looked around.

"Why not ask the dragons? They've fixed so much else."

"They're busy now."

"With what?" I asked.

"Plotting war."

"Another one? Is that all they do?"

She arched a brow. "They've had centuries of peace, haven't they?"

"How would I know? I'm not even twenty."

Hella laughed. "You've spent more time with them than anyone else."

I shrugged. "Ana isn't any older than me, and she didn't know her father—or her heritage for long. It wasn't like she could tell me anything."

"Interesting." She had an odd expression on her face.

"What?"

"She didn't know she was a dragon, right?" She held my gaze.

"That's how we met. What's your point?"

"If neither of you were dragon—as far as you knew—how did you guys get in the city?"

"The door opened because she was dragon. Or because of my mark." I paused, thinking. "It was my mark. I'm half-dragon. What are you getting at?"

"And somehow, the two of you got your own rooms in the castle? She was a human, as far as anyone knew, and you—a vampire."

"Half vampire," I corrected. "Again, what's your point?"

"Don't you wonder how that happened?"

"Not really. Rodric was dating me, and he gave me a place to stay. It's pretty straightforward."

"And yet you stayed after his death?" she asked. "You spent a lot of time there."

"Of course. After being locked away in our castle my whole life, what else would you expect? I had an entirely new city at my fingertips. I wanted to explore and meet new people."

"Who all did you meet?" She stared at me.

"Ana."

"You met her in the homeland. You're the one who brought her down to the hidden city and she found her heritage, true?"

I leaned against a beam stuck in the ground. "What are you getting at? We're not even in the witchly fog, and you're starting to annoy me again."

"You spent so much time there. Who did you spend it with?"

My eyes narrowed, and I could feel pressure building. "Ana!"

"Who else?"

"Just her, all right? I've learned to be a loner, and I was happy with just one friend."

"No romance?"

"Back off."

"Why?"

I turned to her. "What gives? This isn't like you at all."

"It just seems like you're forgetting something. Someone, actually."

"No. My entire life was spent in the castle and with Blake. I was feeling claustrophobic, and needed to get away from everything. It wasn't anything personal against him, but he was part of the castle and my imprisonment."

"You'd call that being imprisoned after—?"

"It was a different form." I stepped away from her. "And I'm starting to feel it again. You wait for Rupert. I need to take a walk and clear my head."

Her face softened. "I'm not trying to push you away, Eylin. I'm trying to help you."

"By pissing me off?"

"No. There's more to your travels than you're saying."

"Really, there's not.
