‘And if you do not come home, Miss?’ Helga’s eyes brimmed with tears, her face lined with concern.

‘You know where to come and find me.’

‘Are you sure you should do this? I don’t mean to question you, but…’

My arms wound around her slim shoulders. ‘I know the risks, Helga. This is something I have to do.’ Squeezing her tightly made me no less nervous, and I felt her tense in my arms.

A final protest, ‘please don’t go, Miss. You cannot be sure of his intentions.’

‘And I cannot be sure of my own master before I hear what he has to say about it.’ I had made up my mind and no talk of protecting my safety would dissuade me.

‘But what if…’ she trailed off.

‘I have Skära with me, see,’ parting my cloak to show her my axe secured in the leather belt around my waist.

‘But Kjarr could overpower you before you have a chance to use it,’ she cried.

‘It will not come to that,’ I said, hugging her again.

‘You do not have to go.’

We parted, and I smiled down at her. ‘You know I have to.’

She pulled tight to me. ‘Just please be careful.’

‘I will,’ I agreed as I released her.

‘Quick, you best go now before she sees you leaving, Miss.’

I huffed, ‘I don’t think that is going to be a problem. Of late she has been spending many nights away only to tiptoe back into the house in the early morning.’ I tucked one of my neat braids behind my ear and pulled my hood over my head.

‘I thought it was strange that she asked me to put the fire out before I go to sleep. Usually, she wants me to keep it going until she gets home,’ Helga replied.

‘Nothing is ever clear with Neflaug,’ I mumbled, bundling myself out the door.

At first I had heeded Neflaug’s cautions without doubt, but as the days passed into weeks, her need for control intensified and I found myself gasping for freedom. It was as if she wanted me all to herself, a desperate need to be the only one to have any influence over me. I am a woman grown, not a child, and I know when someone is trying to blind me. Deciding to seek more information was easy but, I knew that once I had more deciphering the truth, may never come to pass. I would need to trust myself.

The sun had set, and the wind blew cold, making me glad for the double hood I wore, for it kept the unseasonable change from nipping at my face. In the days before, Neflaug had gifted me yet another fine dress, this one fit for the colder weather. Made from thick red wool, it was long, stopping to graze the ground, and I had to lift it slightly as I walked to the tavern to avoid soiling it. At the neckline, wrists, and hem, she trimmed the dress with hare fur to add extra warmth. Under my dress, thick stockings, and leather boots protected my feet.
