Chapter 17
Dante Heed
The moment I stormed out of Hunter's office, I felt a surge of frustration coursing through my veins. My nostrils flared as I took in a deep breath, trying to catch Harper's scent. The air was heavy with an intoxicating mix of emotions, but I needed to find her.
"Fuck," I muttered under my breath, feeling like a goddamn bloodhound.
As I walked down the hallway, each step fuelled by my determination to find her, I finally caught a faint whiff of her unique scent - a combination of vanilla and Lavender with a hint of something wild that made my wolf stir inside me. It was like a goddamn drug, and I couldn't get enough.
My feet moved on their own accord, following the trail she left behind like a moth drawn to a flame. My heart raced in anticipation, the closer I got to what felt like the edge of the world. I couldn't help but think about how fucked up everything had become, but there was one thing I knew for sure: I'd do anything for her.
Before I knew it, I found myself outside, the salty sea breeze brushing against my face and carrying away my worries for a fleeting moment. My eyes scanned the horizon, desperate to catch a glimpse of her. And then, there she was â a lone figure sitting at the edge of the harbour, seemingly lost in her own thoughts.
She was a vision of vulnerability, sitting in the same spot where our worlds first collided. The memory crept up on me, reminding me how much had changed since I saw her from my wolf's eyes. At that moment, my mate and destiny were revealed to me, and now, here we were again, the harbour our witness.
"Harper," I called out softly, approaching her with caution. She looked up, her green eyes shimmering with unshed tears, like dew on a goddamn leaf. I couldn't stand seeing her like this.
"Hey," she whispered back, trying to put on a brave face for my sake. But I could see through it.
Taking a seat beside her, I wrapped an arm around her shoulders, drawing her close. We sat there, looking out over the harbour, the crashing waves reflecting the turmoil in my chest. I couldn't help but think how fucked up everything had become, but there was one thing I knew for sure: I'd do anything for her.
"Are you okay?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the wind and waves.
"Am I ever okay?" she replied with a humourless laugh, wiping away a stray tear that dared to escape.
"Fair point," I conceded, squeezing her gently.
The sea breeze brushed against our skin, a gentle reminder of the world's chaos outside our little bubble. Harper stared out at the rolling waves as if they held the answers to everything that weighed on her heart.
"Sometimes... I wish I was normal, you know?" she said, her voice barely audible over the sound of crashing waves. "Normal parents who both loved and cared for me, normal school, normal friends.
