All about tracheal suctioning

If a patient can’t mobilize secretions effectively by coughing, he may have to perform tracheal suctioning at home using either clean or aseptic technique. Most patients use clean technique, which consists of thorough hand washing and possibly wearing a clean glove.

Because the cost of disposable catheters can be prohibitive, many patients reuse disposable catheters. Consult your facility’s policy regarding the care and cleaning of nondisposable suction catheters in the home setting.

Making the grade

Before discharge, the patient and his family should demonstrate the suctioning procedure. They also need to recognize the indications for suctioning; the signs and symptoms of infection; the importance of adequate hydration; and when to use adjunct therapy, such as aerosol therapy, chest physiotherapy, oxygen therapy, or a handheld resuscitation bag. At discharge, arrange for a home health care provider and a durable medical equipment vendor to follow up with the patient.
