Chapter 25
Kaycee and Sims made love for hours. It brought back the good times theyâd once had together. Granted, both had been stepping out from their marriages, but maybe thatâs what made it all the more exciting.
During a break in the action, Kaycee thought back to the fallout from the affair.
Once their affair was discovered and their respective spouses filed for divorce, the problems began for Kaycee and Sims. The mystery and danger associated with an affair no longer existed. They stayed together for a while longer, but they eventually drifted apart. And once the FBI was told about the affair by Jack, Kayceeâs husband, she was called on the carpet and reprimanded.
That was the beginning of the end of Kayceeâs FBI career. Over the next several years, she found herself becoming reckless and uncaring. Her affair with Sims was just the beginning of a long line of one-night stands and wild behaviorânone of which was missed by her superiors.
Through it all, she never forgot Jackâs story about the Russian logbook and the treasure. When Michaelaâs mother became ill, Kaycee tried to worm her way into their lives. A call from the dying woman to Kayceeâs boss charging harassment finally ended Kayceeâs career. But she didnât let go of the story of the treasure. When Michaelaâs mother died, Kaycee tried to step in, but the state had already placed Michaela with her father, Sims.
Sims had a suspicious mind, so Kaycee had to be careful, biding her time. But sheâd waited too long. Sims whisked Michaela off into the wilds. If she wanted the logbook, she would have to journey to Simsâs compound to get it.
She thought back to that fateful flight. Jack had called her to ask if she knew where Sims was. She knew but wasnât going to tell Jack. That is until he threatened to go to the authorities and report Sims for child endangerment. He intended to rescue Michaela and petition the courts for custody. He didnât know exactly what Sims was doing, but a phone call from Michaela was enough for him to know that it was dishonest. Kaycee knew that Sims didnât need the scrutiny from the Feds, and she also knew that it was a golden opportunity to steal the logbook from Michaela. She knew approximately where Sims was, so she offered to guide Jack to the location.
It was never her intention to kill Jackâit just happened. In fact, the last thing she wanted was to be stuck in a small plane with him. But the opportunity couldnât be passed up. She felt sorry for Jack, as there was no way Sims would let him leave after seeing his operation. But that wasnât her problem.
It was Jackâs sudden realization of why Kaycee was so willing to guide him that resulted in his deathâ¦.
