“Do we want to send out a message?” Chaniago’s lieutenant held up his cell phone. The confirmation of the explosion came from one of their men on a mountaintop near Padang. “He can see the flames.”

Chaniago smiled.

“Where are the containers?”

“I’m not sure.”

Chaniago’s smile turned to a torrent of screaming.

The guard at Kuala Tanjung looked at the paperwork again. It was poor quality, with the name of a shipping company he had not heard of before. The three trucks stood waiting at the gate with a container on each. The container port had only been open a short time. Its paint was fresh, its infrastructure was clean and new, and its guardhouse was well built.

The lead driver smiled at the guard. He pulled the AK-47, hidden under the towel next to his leg, closer. The machine gun had a round in the chamber and the safety was off.

The trucks were old, however, and they were only able to move slowly through the gears. If he made a run for it, the last truck had little chance of making it through the gate. His cell phone rang. He answered it and the screams on the other end broadcast without it even being on speaker.

The driver pointed to his phone as if to say “my boss is not happy.”

The guard smiled back with an acknowledgment that they both had bosses who could be unreasonable. He waved his hand to signal the trucks to move forward.

The driver smiled, lifted his hand from the towel and waved. He moved his hand to the stick shift and put the truck in gear. Its gears crunched as he forced the truck from neutral into first.

The truck stuttered and then shut off.

Frantically, he shifted back into neutral and turned the key. It fired up again and he shifted it back into first. The truck jumped forward as he lifted his foot off the clutch too quickly; however, it didn’t shut off this time.

The gate had several floodlights that lit up the scene. The driver was nearly blinded by the lights that were trained directly on him in the cab and the other two trucks following. He pulled down the visor, trying to see as he began to move forward. The guard had started to cross in front of the truck and the driver didn’t initially see the man.

Again, he hit the brakes and the truck lurched to a stop as the guard nearly was struck by the front bumper. He signaled a sign of apology and the guard didn’t seem to mind. It appeared that this wasn’t the first time that a near miss had occurred at night with the bright, blinding lights. The guard moved on to the cement pillbox-like structure that served as the guardhouse. Inside and behind the thick, green bulletproof glass the driver could see movement of the several other guards on the shift.

The truck started to move forward and passed over the strips used to slow down the vehicles. He moved out, past the gate and onto the paved highway.
