After checking on Danny, Cari went into the connecting bathroom for a much-needed shower. Ten minutes later, under steaming hot water, she managed to feel almost human again. She wondered if Danny would allow her the luxury of a nap today. Pulling on her robe, she wrapped a towel around her wet hair and began applying moisturizer to her face, when the door swung open. Thinking it was Danny, she asked, “What do you need, honey?” Her words died when she caught sight of Nick’s reflection in the mirror.

“Oh,” she gasped, and whirled around. “I thought you were Danny.” Her heart was thumping as she looked up to find Nick leaning against the doorjamb. He was wearing last night’s jeans and a polo shirt. His black hair had a sexy mussed look and she could see the morning stubble. on his strong jaw. Would it feel rough and raspy to the touch?

“Sorry, I didn’t know you were in here.” His piercing gray eyes did a lazy once-over of her short satin robe and she felt her nipples tingle in response.

“I’ll be finished in a few minutes,” she said, feeling a sudden dryness in her throat.

Nick shook his head as if coming out of a trance. He held up Danny’s favorite cup. “His highness asked for a glass of water. Would you mind?”

She stepped back and allowed him access to the sink. The room seemed to shrink in size. Like a lovesick teenager, she simply stood there, gazing at Nick’s broad back as he leaned over the sink. All she could think about was last night…his kiss. She imagined she could still taste the scent of his cologne on her lips. Good grief. She was a mess and going downhill fast.

She was about to leave when he set the cup on the counter and turned toward her. He was close—too close. “I wanted to thank you for the way you handled things last night.” He looked a little sheepish. “As you already know, I really blew it.”

Cari was surprised at his confession. “You were just concerned.”

“I was paranoid.” His silver eyes met hers. “And I made you think I didn’t trust your judgment, which isn’t true.”

Cari glanced away. “People say things when they’re upset.”

Nick reached out and cupped her chin. Her sad, vulnerable look tore at him, especially when he knew he had caused it. “I had no right You We made Danny happier than I’ve seen him in a long time.” Reluctantly he released her. “But it doesn’t change the fact that I’m afraid every time my son leaves this house. And after yesterday’s outing, I thought—”

“You thought I put Danny in harm’s way.”

“Not intentionally.”

“Not unintentionally, either.”

He was speechless. Did she know him that well? He glanced down at her skimpy robe, at the soft curves barely hidden by the silky material. Could she also read his mind and know how much he wanted her right this minute?

“I care about Danny,” Cari went on. “I’d do anything to keep him healthy.
