Aerie’s parents drop us off at Carlmont, and I decide to take Aerie’s advice. It’s easier to go with it than to try to make sense of it. So I go with it.

I make sure to take my bag with two hands as Mrs. Jung carries it to me. I bow at a ninety-degree angle when they’re about to leave. And say gamsahabnida instead of thank you.

Aerie’s right. It’s not hard to do those things even if they’re not natural to me. And I can tell it means so much to Mr. and Mrs. Jung; their smiles at me today stretch wider than in the entire two weeks I was with them. It still feels fake-adjacent, like I’m putting on an act for the sake of someone’s happiness. But I also believe in good intentions, and my intentions are genuine, like Aerie’s.
