I accidentally let three calls go to voice mail in my shock as I absorb the comments one by one. Most of them are one-liners—some are grammar police—but there are a few absolute gems. Five-line paragraphs comparing it to other writers—real writers—ones far more famous than I am. Whole stanzas about clever ways I might be able to pick other stories. So many people tagging others—lots of “@GemmaMannaly, this sounds just like you!” and “OMG @DanMFee, you HAVE to read this.”

On Facebook I currently have 972 friends, which I would consider a lot given I only really speak to the same five people. A lot of them are randomers from different stages of my life—some school, some uni, a few encounters along the way and in between—but even if all the randomers in my life corralled together and invited a friend to read this with them, I still wouldn’t reach anywhere near the 4,890 people who are following my work.

My first reaction is the same as my first reaction to anything. I get off B-Reader, turn to my messages, and excitedly type in Ellie’s name, but then I pause.

Her texts linger on my phone.
