Chapter 38

One evening, as Kendra was getting ready to leave her office for the day, she received the last payment from Ian through the office mail. True to his word, he paid Kendra all the money that he had blackmailed her for, including the ‘loan’ he ‘borrowed’ from her the last time they spoke.

The last check was accompanied by a note from him that said, Kennie, sorry again for my bad behavior and thanks. Love always, Ian. Kendra was not sure whether she was relieved or disappointed by the simplicity of the note. She did notice however that he said, ‘Love always,’ wondering if she was reading too much into that.

Kendra read the note one more time, kissed it and then pressed it against her chest before tucking it in her purse as she silently resolved yet again to push her growing feelings for him aside and refocus wholly on Peter. She was glad that she married Peter. In the years that they have been married, he had proven himself to be the man any woman would be glad to call her husband. He made her feel safe, he was responsible, he was even-tempered and he was a good father to the children. Peter was her rock but there was also that ‘something’ about Ian that was now toying with her love for Peter. She wondered whether it was possible to love two men at the same time. Whatever the case, she decided that she was not in love with Ian again. She was in love with Peter and for this reason, she chose to believe that whatever feelings she was redeveloping for Ian, it would eventually fade away.
