CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

By the time seven o' clock rolled around, Camille wasn't feeling bogged down by a lack of sleep any longer. Instead, she used the little surge of adrenaline from the scene of Gary Anderson's death to urge her on. Still, when she arrived at the coffee shop in Chalmette, she was a bit too eager to grab a cup of coffee. While waiting in line, a man came through the door and also stepped into line. It was the sort of awkward first-meeting moment that was broken by the social conventions of coffee lines and other patrons but when they came out of it, Camille found herself sitting at a table in the back of the coffee shop with the zoologist Officer Bradford had connected her with.

His name was Zack Hayes, a thirty-one-year-old that had lived his entire life in the greater New Orleans area. He had the type of calm and collected exterior that made Camille feel that he was probably very easy-going. More than that, within just a minute of sitting across from him and getting through introductions, she found it hard to see him as a zoologist. He had the sort of appearance that made her think of men in their early thirties that still attended concerts and shot-gunned beers in an attempt to keep their grasp on youth for as long they could.

"I appreciate you meeting with me so early and on such short notice," she said once introductions were out of the way.

"Oh, of course. Sadly, this is exciting for me."

"Not much going on in the world of zoology teachers?"

"No. And to be clear, I'm not a zoology teacher. I'm a biology teacher at the community college. But I did study zoology in college. And I help out at the New Orleans Zoo from time to time...medicine, physical therapy for some of the aquatic animals, things like that."

Camille also found it easy to listen to him. He spoke with an eager excitement, an energy that seemed to match his appearance. Short-cut but shaggy hair that rarely saw a comb from the looks of it, along with deep, dark brown eyes. He had the sort of five o' clock shadow on his face that seemed like it might somehow be there all the time.

"So, I need to show you some pictures. I was told by Officer Bradford that you're okay with the sight of gore, right?"

"I don't enjoy it, but I can handle it. He may have told you I've served as a liaison for coyote attacks and ideas about how to push gator populations further away from populated areas."

"That's good," she said. She opened up a few of the file photos on her phone, including two of Gary Anderson that had been emailed to her just fifteen minutes ago. "First look...what can you tell me about these pictures?"

Zack took the phone and though he did grimace at first, he handled it like a pro.

"Three different victims, yeah?"

"That's right. One is just as recent as four hours ago.
