Chapter 13

Ty was coming over in a few minutes. I was so anxious that I didn’t know what to do with myself. Since I called him on my way home from the hospital after visiting Erika, I’d been thinking about ways I could break the news to him. Erika tried to convince me to wait until tomorrow after I rested on the news myself, but I figured the amount of time between today and tomorrow wouldn’t make a big difference. He should know now. This was his baby too. I always imagined I would surprise my husband with the big news of our pregnancy by buying a baby bottle, wrapping it, and watching him unwrap the gift, or I would wrap the pregnancy test in a neat gift and have him open it. Ty and I having had broken up made telling him this news rather difficult. I hadn’t spoken to him since the fight he had with Terrance at the mall on my birthday. That fact alone made it hard for me to call him, but I was happy when he didn’t decline. I told him I really needed to talk to him and it couldn’t wait.

“Hey, thanks for coming right over,” I said to Ty after opening the door for him and letting him in.

“Yeah, you sounded serious.” He took a seat in the living room. “It’s good seeing you,” he said, studying me.

“You too,” I replied, blushing, totally forgetting our last encounter in the mall. God, he still had a hold on me. “How are things with you?” I asked after closing the door and taking a seat opposite him. I was stalling a bit, still unsure how to tell him exactly, as if we weren’t just lovers months ago. “Would you like something to drink?”

“No, I’m cool. So what’s up?”

I guess there was no better way to tell him, so I came right out with the news.

“I’m pregnant,” I said with my head down, unsure of what his reaction might be.

“What?” he asked with doubt, sitting straight up in the armchair.

“I’m pregnant; I just found out today.” There—it was out in the open. I breathed a sigh of relief.

“How did this happen?”

I almost laughed at his question. “Well, when you put your hot dog in my bread, this has the tendency of happening,” I replied sarcastically, unintentionally.

“I meant how do I know it’s mine, Virtue? We haven’t been having sex like we used to, and after we broke up, I see you in the mall on your birthday with that country club dude, so how do I know it’s mine?”

“Ty, not that again,” I said as calm as possibly. I certainly didn’t want any drama about this. I got that he was in shock. I was too, but he needed to cool off on his accusations.

“What am I supposed to think, Virtue? When you and ya boy Kevin broke up, you and I hooked up right away. How do I know you didn’t do the same with this new guy since we broke up?”

Okay, being calm was now replaced with rage.
