CHAPTER NINETEEN

When Camille sat down across from Dr. Albert Penderhook, she was struck by his almost lackadaisical posture. He looked like a man about to hit the beach or watch a movie rather than a respected professor of anthropology. The top two buttons of his white button-down shirt were unbuttoned and his hair looked as if it had been out in the sun for a good amount of time. She guessed him to be about forty, but he was the sort of man that carried forty as if he was still living like he was twenty-one.

"I want to thank you for meeting with me this morning," Camille said. "As I said on the phone, Agent Scott Palmer thought you'd be of some assistance."

"Well, I'm happy to help if I can. On the phone, you said you think these murders you're working on might be voodoo related?"

"That's where I'm leaning, yes."

She handed him the single case file she'd compiled.

"There are crime scene photos in there, but they are very minimal. Just...well, I just want you to be warned."

He nodded his appreciation. While he looked at the files, Camille took a moment to study the office. It was both well-organized and slightly messy at the same time. It was the perfect mix of book-worm teenager and studious professor. There were volumes of books on a shelf on the right wall, holding volumes on ancient vocalizations and tribes, as well as books on psychedelic drugs. There were a number of artifacts and treasures on his desk and shelf, but it was all offset by one of those tacky-looking big-head toys called Pops. Penderhook's Pop was the likeness of Indiana Jones.

The photos didn't seem to bother Penderhook too badly. After he'd looked at all eight of them, he set them out on his desk in a way that they could both study them.

"How far apart were the locations they were found in?"

"Roughly twelve miles," Camille said. "As far as we can tell, there is no connection between the locations other than they were in the same large stretch of forest."

"Well, to me, the most interesting thing isn't so much that they were injected with something to knock them out."

"It's those pin prick marks on their chests, right?"

"Yes."

"Have you ever seen that before? Is it part of some sort of bizarre ritual I just haven't heard of?"

"Well, we are in voodoo territory here. But even if we weren't, I'd say there's SOME sort of ritualistic elements."

"So let's say I'm a newbie to this," Camille said. "Can you explain why you feel this way?"

"Well, the pinpricks themselves mean something. They're not random. And the circular formation of them indicate something recurring. Like a loop. And if you get into symbology for just about any culture or religion, that's often a sign or indicator of rebirth. And the fact that it's right there, on their chests, is even more interesting. But it's not any sort of voodoo I've ever seen or heard of being practiced in this area.
