The kitchen had been cleaned up, and the dishwasher was doing its job while I refilled our wine glasses. Otto had gone to check on Ajax, reminding me he was here to look after my dog. But after he’d held me, allowing me to cry as long as I needed, it felt as if he was here for me too. I was sure he’d called me babe. He wouldn’t say that if he didn’t like me. Right? But the way he’d joked around with the copper this morning, was that how he was? How the fuck would I know?

“Here’s your glass, Otto.” He’d returned from my bedroom and now lounged back on the sofa. I sat next to him. “Is Ajax okay?”

“He’s a champ. You definitely chose the right name for him. He’s doing really well. I’ll need to run another blood test tomorrow but he’s already looking better. How about you? Are you over the shock of finding him here? I doubt the police will find anyone. They haven’t had much luck with the stolen dogs.”

“You seemed to know Richards well. Is he an ex of yours?” I clamped my hand over my mouth. What was I doing? Way to sound interested. I hadn’t expected him to burst out laughing.

“No.” He wiped the tears from his eyes. “Sorry for laughing. No, he’s my brother-in-law. He’d be so lucky to get me. I’m fussy about who I like to date.” He gave me a long, lazy once-over.

“What’s your type, then?” Oh god, why did I ask that? Could I sound any needier? He was going to tell me he liked little blond twinks. And now my cheeks were hot again. Fuck, fuck, fuck.

Otto set his glass on the coffee table, his tongue darting over his lip, and I watched it, mesmerised like a needy fucking fool. “I like tall, dark-haired, nerdy kind of men. Ones who blush at their own thoughts. I like sweet-natured, soft-hearted men who like animals.”

By the time he’d finished speaking, his mouth was so close to mine his warm breath danced over my lips. The room was quiet. The only sounds were the crackle of the fire behind the glass of the wood burner and our heavy breathing. It was as if the wind had held its breath and the snow had stilled, just like me, waiting to see what he would do.

“I like you, Hunter.” Then he pressed his mouth to mine. Firm with just the right amount of pressure. As I parted my lips, he dipped the tip of his tongue between them, meeting mine. How could that sweet, tentative movement make me all gooey inside? As if by unspoken agreement, we kept our kisses light, never deepening but just taking little nibbles, tasting each other. I loved the rich berry flavour of the wine and the smooth taste of him, of man.

“I like you too, Otto.” I spoke quietly and gave him another peck on his lips.

He furrowed his brow as he eyed me with a wary look.
