âWas that Marigold?â Chuck hissed.
Henry debated pretending he didnât know who Chuck was talking about but decided not to poke the nervous groom.
âIt was. Iâd never met her before, sheâsâ¦â
âA crackpot? The biggest mistake I ever made? Wacko?â
âI was going to say interesting and kind. Although I canât imagine the two of you together.â
Chuck leaned in so Henry was the only one who could hear his words. âGreat sex.â
âReally, Chuck? Thatâs crass.â
Not that he expected anything more from Chuck, he was rude and crass.
He shrugged. âWhat can I say?â
âYou can not say anything about sex with your sonâs mother, ever.â
Chuckâs eyebrows drew together. âHow did you get roped into talking to her anyway?â
Never, was the time to share that Henry and Ben had had a one-night stand in Maine. That it had been the best thing to happen to Henry in years. That heâd spent the past six weeks daydreaming about Chuckâs son and wishing he knew how to find him.
âOh, you know. Proximity.â
The table did have seating cards propped up against each plate. Henry strolled around it and when he spotted Benâs name at a seat three down from the bride, he exchanged it with Clark Wiserâs card. Clark could spend the dinner talking to Melissaâs vapid bridesmaid, Henry wanted Ben next to him. Heâd buy Clark a bottle of his favorite scotch as an apology.
By the time Ben returned, everyone was seated except Melissa and Chuck. Melissa stood in a corner, not so quietly arguing with staff about the name mix-up. Henry felt guilty about it, but not enough to confess. Ben spotted his wave and strode over to take the seat next to him.
For the first time in weeks, Henry felt like he could breathe again.
Shaking his napkin out, Ben lay it across his lap. âThanks for saving me a seat. I donât know anyone. I only agreed to come because at least the food will be incredible.â
âOh, yeah?â
Ben nodded. âThe chef, Dany Petry, is pretty much fresh out of culinary school, but heâs talented and heâs got a great palate.â
âWait,â Henry said. âAre you really studying to be a sommelier?â
âI want to. Dany and I worked together choosing the wines for tonight, so youâll have to tell me what you think.â
âIâm a lawyer. What I know about wine is only to impress my lawyer friends.â
âDo you have many of those?â
âFriends, or lawyer friends?â
Ben cocked his head. âFriends.â
âA few. Not many. My closest friend lives here on the island.â
âReally?â
He knew Ben was about to ask who Henryâs friend on the island was when one of the catering staff leaned between them to set their dinners down.
âOh, you got the salmon.â Ben waggled his eyebrows. âI ordered the tenderloin, we can trade bites. Danyâs been stressing about this dinner for days. Melissa was able to swoop in when another wedding party canceled, and sheâs been a bit more hands-on than Dany appreciates.â Henry stared at him, fork halfway to his mouth. âWhat?â
Blinking and shaking his head, Henry replied, âJust surprised youâd be so bold.
