âI hear you have traveled abroad,â I say.
âYes,â Hassan replies. âMy girl friend took me with her.â
âWho was your girl friend?â
âShe was a lady from Switzerland.â
âDid you ask her to take you abroad with her?â
âNo. She invited me.â
âWhat did she say to you?â
âShe said she liked me. She said she was lonely and wanted me to be her friend and companion. Her husband had just died, and she had a lot of money from him.â
âDid you think it strange?â
âNo. Many mzungus offer to take beachboys like myself home with them. I have had many invitations.â
âHow old was your girl friend?â
Hassan hesitates. The question embarrasses him.
âWas she much older than you?â
âMuch.â
âHow much?â
âShe was fifty years old.â
âHow did you meet her?â
âAs I meet all the other mzungus. They come, they ask for a guide. If they pick me, I take them around and show them what there is to be seen. Most of them, though, do not only want a guide.â
âWhat do they want?â
âI am sure you can guess. Germans are the worst.â
âAnd you give them what they want?â
âWhy not? They pay me well.â
âMen too?â
âYes. Men too.â Hassan smiles. âIt is all the same to meâmen or women.â
âTell me more about your girl friend from Switzerland.â
âShe was not a human being. Very few mzungus are human beings.â
âWhy do you say that?â
âBecause of the way they treat us.â
âHow do they treat you?â
âLike animals. Most of them only want one thing from us.â
âWhy, then, did you go abroad with your Swiss girl friend?â
âBecause I wanted to see the world and she was giving me the opportunity. Because I didnât think she would be like all the rest who wanted to take me with them.â Again Hassan hesitates. âShe said she wanted to adopt me.â
âTo adopt you!â
âThat was what she said.â
âDid you see something of the world?â
âYes. We spent many months traveling. She took me to Italy, to France and to Spain.â
âDid you enjoy it?â
âTo begin with. I liked seeing all those different places and learning how other people lived. But then it got harder and harder for me.â
âWhat went wrong?â
âShe turned out to be of a very jealous disposition.â
âHow did it show itself?â
âIn many ways. She would get very angry if she saw me talking to another girl. She would even get angry if she saw me looking at another girl. She wanted to have me all to herself. OnceâI believe it was in Parisâshe threw a glass of wine over a waitress who smiled at me. In Spain it got very bad. She wouldnât let me out of her sight; she wouldnât let me leave the hotel room to go out for a walk. I was like a prisoner. Alsoâ¦â
âYes?â
âShe became very demanding. Day and night she wanted me. An old woman like thatâit was disgusting. She wasnât human at all by then.â
âWhat did you do?â
âI was a prisoner. She had all the moneyâshe would never let me have any in case I ran away from her. Finally, it got so bad I
