Twenty-Nine
Andrew Forbes approached a small village in the eastern foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains when his cell phone buzzed to life. He was seventy miles west of Washington, DC.
A manâs voice told him, âYouâre getting closer.â
âThank God for that. I thought I was never going to get there.â
âDrive on for two more miles.â
Forbes did as he was told. He saw the sign marked O ld Rag Mountain.
âYouâll get on the Old Rag Mountain trail up ahead.â
âOld Ragââ
âThen get out of your vehicle and hike on the dirt path.â
âGot it.â
âOne final thing: remember, take the battery out of your cell phone.â
âWhy do you want me to do that?â
âSo, we know youâre alone and not being followed. Do you copy?â
âI understand. Sorry, copy that, yes.â
âDonât be late.â
Forbesâs mouth went dry. He considered what the hell he was doing out in the middle of nowhere. He drove until he saw the sign and parked. He got out of the vehicle. He pulled on his backpack that contained water, a compass, and some cereal bars. He carefully took the battery out of his cell phone and placed it in a side pocket. He followed the dirt path into the woods. He hiked on for a mile through a forest, heading higher into the wild. Shoulder-high ferns brushed his skin. He flicked away the flies buzzing his face. âFuck!â
He trudged through single-track trails and ankle-deep streams until he came to a clearing. Two men stood, wearing camouflage, shades, and masks, each holding semi-automatics, blocking his path.
The smaller of the two stepped forward. âSpread âem! Hands on your head!â
Forbes complied as the guy frisked the insides of his legs, waist, and chest. The backpack was ripped off his back.
âWeâll hold on to this for safekeeping.â
âI need my cell phone.â
âNot where youâre going.â
âWhere to now?â
The smaller of the two pointed to a narrow opening in the trees. âFollow that route. Ten minutes due south, up the trail. Youâll arrive at a log cabin. Sheâll be waiting outside for you.â The man cocked his head in the direction of the trail. âGo on, get!â
Forbes took the hint and moved on, quickening his pace. He hadnât expected such a welcome party. His shirt clung to his sweaty back. He hiked hard, wishing he had his backpack to take a drink of water. Eventually he came to a clearing, and the log cabin, and the woman.
Standing, hands on her hips, was Karen Feinstein.
âWhat took you so long?â
Forbes wiped his brow with the back of his hands. âI got lost somewhere around God knows where.â He walked up to her and hugged her tight. âWhatâs with the goons half a mile back?â
âDonât worry, theyâre my guys. Theyâre just not house-trained.â
âThey need to lighten up.â
âThat is them lightened up.â
âWhatâs this all about?â
âLoose ends. I wanted to give you an update in person. Things are getting trickier than we anticipated.â
âWhat the hell does that mean?â
âWe had a situation last night. We thought we would nip this McNeal character in the bud.â
âI thought this was supposed to be a slam dunk.
