ELLIE WAS RELAXING in the shade of a beautiful old oak tree when a shadow fell over her. She looked up to find Clara standing over her, grinning from ear to ear.

“Oh, Ellie! It’s so much more beautiful than I expected. And I’ve met Mrs. Phillips, and she was so pleasant! I just know she won’t stand in the way once Ned tells her about marrying me.”

“And have you seen Ned yet?”

“Not yet. But his brother said he’s busy putting together the races for this evening. I’m sure he’ll be—”

A choking sound drew their attention to the man who had just exited the stables and stood only feet away from them. Both women turned to see Ned, looking stricken.

Ellie jumped to her feet, wanting to give him some relief, to say anything that could make this moment less terrible for all of them.

“Ned!” She said, more loudly than she meant to. “I believe you already know Miss Clara Bridges?”

Ned blinked at the two of them, then looked helplessly at Ellie, nodding sadly as if in apology.

She felt Clara’s narrowed eyes on her.

“Yes. Clara. Nice to see you.”

“I’m sure you’re surprised to see me here.”

He nodded again.

“Why don’t we take a walk and I can tell you everything?”

Clara stepped forward and reached for his arm, almost dragging him away.

Ellie sagged against the oak tree and watched as they walked off, leaving her alone with her thoughts. If she thought seeing them together would give her some idea of his feelings for Clara, she was wrong. His face been utterly blank. The only emotion that registered was shock. How horrible it must have been for him — not just to be surprised by his secret fiancee, but to be ambushed by her and the woman he had fallen in love with. At least she thought he was in love with her. He looked apologetic, so he was at least worried about hurting her.

She took a deep breath and steeled herself to return to the party. She couldn’t very well walk home. It was several miles away and she wasn’t totally sure in which direction. So instead, she made her way to the food, where she helped herself to an obscene amount of her own peach pie.

She had just sat down to eat when a gunshot rang out and she jumped sky high. A cheer went up and she followed the noise to an area behind the stables, where she saw Moira lowering a gun. What in the world...
