Same Blood

Ironically, the reason why Mr. Héctor hates me is the same reason Ms. Villanueva used to like me. Teacher Héctor is a man in his 50s. Ill-humored most of the time. It seems like he’s always smelling crap, Dad says. “Yuriel, if I catch you drawing again during my class, you’ll have to take yourself and your sketchbook outside. Understand?” In his bald head, he’s always right. Always ahead. I call him “Mr. Creativity Killer.”

A Few Weeks Ago

when I went out to recess, I glanced at Azul wearing a school skirt. Kids were laughing while the teacher was behind her. I looked at her with a “what the heck is going on” face. She ignored me and kept walking down the hall. They stopped in front of the door of the school counselor’s office. “Hey!” I let out. “What happened?” Azul just shook her head. “It’s okay, Yuriel.” Teacher Héctor turned around and said to me, “What happened? Well, it happened that your cousin Luis is wearing skirts and disturbing the classroom’s peace.” I said, “First, what peace? There’s no peace without justice, and this is clearly unfair …” My voice grew loud. Azul’s eyes widened. “Yuriel, leave it.” “… and second, her name is Azul. Not Luis.” “You two,” he paused, “have to be of the same blood.” “What’s wrong with that?” I exclaimed. “You really want to talk, huh? Well, you’ll also be suspended for two days. And I want your mom here tomorrow as well.” Ironically, the reason why Teacher Héctor hated me is the same reason Miss Villanueva liked me: for speaking up freely.
