CHAPTER 12

Hart Street, London

Office of the Order

Deciding to consult Mr Daventry before returning home to Portland Place, Olivia and Grayson arrived at the Order’s townhouse and were shown into the plush drawing room.

The master of the Order sat in the wing chair, cradling a glass of brandy between his long fingers. Mr Sloane, an enquiry agent of exceptional skill, lounged on the sofa. His long hair hung loose, and he often reminded Olivia of a pirate or an explorer from the Elizabethan era.

Both men stood, though Mr Daventry studied them with keen eyes and said, “Back so soon? Did the earl not prove as welcoming as one hoped?”

“We exhausted all lines of enquiry,” Olivia said, feeling like a child remiss in her studies. “But we shall explain all if you can spare the time.”

Mr Daventry motioned to the vacant sofa. “I’m intrigued to learn what you discovered and have some news of my own to impart.”

Mr Sloane arched a curious brow while scanning Grayson’s shirtsleeves. “What happened to your coat?”

Grayson seemed reluctant to answer, and so she explained on his behalf. “We were attacked on the road. The thug shot at the carriage and shattered the windowpane. Grayson had left his coat on the seat.” So he could worship her without restriction. “Despite numerous attempts, we have been unable to remove all the fragments of glass.”

Mr Daventry’s dark eyes widened. “Thank the Lord you both survived. Where did this happen?”

“A few miles from Mersham Hall,” Grayson said.

The men waited for her to sit before settling into their seats.

“Mr Bower believes Grayson may have been the intended target.” The thought sent a shiver racing down her spine. “The man fired a single shot and, despite being on horseback, was extremely precise.” Had he taken aim a few minutes earlier, Grayson may not have survived.

Mr Sloane rubbed his chin thoughtfully. “So, your coat was on the seat. The lead ball hit the window, shattering the glass, but you were unharmed. Are you certain it was gunfire and not a stray stone?”

“Grayson was not sitting on the seat,” she said, her cheeks turning suddenly hot at the memory of him sucking and licking her sex as if she were a delicious ice at Gunter’s.

A faint groan rumbled in Grayson’s throat. “I had been sitting in the seat but moved a few minutes before. Anyone who had seen us leaving Mersham Hall could have noted our positions.”

Doubtless they failed to predict Grayson would spend time on his knees, though she decided not to say so aloud.

“How fortuitous,” Mr Daventry said, his intense gaze flitting curiously between them. “I shall speak to Bower and see if he can describe the assailant.” He paused. “If you have exhausted all lines of enquiry, perhaps you should begin by telling me everything that occurred during your visit to Mersham Hall.”

Everything!

Should she mention she was a little obsessed with her husband? That their visit had been a journey of discovery in more ways than one? That every night she
