Chapter Twenty-Five

Logan dismounted, handing off the reins to Harwood’s groom. The servant looked at him in pity as he led Jupiter away. Logan chuckled. Did he really think the mass of staring eyes went unnoticed? By his count, at least six men and two children surrounded him in secret hideouts, waiting for the right time to strike.

Or for the leader to give the order.

“Pembroke! I’m here, you cur.” He cracked his knuckles, rolled his shoulders, and grinned like a fool. By God, he couldn’t wait to greet this madness. The impending fight with Pembroke, the recent discovery of fatherhood, seeing Hannah again all set fire to his blood. He belonged right here, fighting for his family.

Distant dreams were at last within his grasp. He only needed to keep his temper long enough to convince a madman to seek out Abby. Once Pembroke clapped eyes on Nathan, Logan’s job would be nearly done. Pembroke would know his son by sight, their resemblance was striking. Logan’s main concern was Abby.

What role in all this was the minx performing? She was a survivor, that one, and would do anything to protect what was hers. A task Logan had helped her with until now.

“Pembroke!”

“Lord Edgewood?” Hannah emerged from the night, holding a kitten of all things. “What are you doing here?” Her voice did not carry the weight of a woman burdened by unwanted captivity. Nor did it reflect longing of any kind to go racing into his arms.

Logan squinted in the moonlight. What manner of stain was on Hannah’s cheeks?

Twin welts. The size of a man’s palm.

His boots tore clods of soil, carrying him to her side in five long strides. He touched her blistered cheeks, careful to keep his mounting rage from coloring his voice. “Where is he, Hannah? I’ll destroy him.”

The kitten hissed, swatting at his gloved hands. Hannah slid her chin from the cradle of his palms, backing away to put the kitten down. “It was not Thomas. I am well enough, Lord Edgewood.”

Thomas? Lord Edgewood?

“Has my name become too burdensome to say?” While Pembroke’s had not? He scanned the darkness, knowing his enemy lay somewhere, watching.

She straightened, then offered the barest hint of a shrug. “I do not think it prudent to call a gentleman by his given name when we are no longer affianced.”

Logan’s stomach twisted in on itself. He’d rather she shout her rage at him, or cry, express any emotion that he could counter. “Have you forgotten your vows to me so soon, wife? You are mine.”

She paled, backpedaling from him. “What a barbaric proclamation to make. I’m not really your wife.”

Logan pursued her across the grass with slow measured steps. “We said the vows. Consummated the marriage. It’s not an illusion and it cannot be undone. I will speak to your father.”

“He knows. I told him, and it didn’t matter.”

“It didn’t matter?” What manner of father didn’t care his daughter’s honor had been stolen without the benefit of marriage?

“Thomas gave my father more money to look the other way, and that quite ended the matter.
