“Put your brother down for his nap,” Hannah said to Lilia. She returned to her telephone call with Maria. “I haven’t heard from Nino since he left.”

“You know, Nino,” Maria said. “He’ll survive.”

“I don’t have a good feeling.”

There was a knock on their apartment door. Hannah asked Maria to wait, then put down the telephone receiver. At the door, a Western Union courier said, “Sign here, ma’am.”

Hannah felt ill as she grasped the telegram. “Oh God, no!”
