Twenty-five minutes later, we arrived at a gas station across from a motel. I don’t know if there were actual fleas at her motel, but it was a shit hole, just as she’d relayed to me.

And this time I remembered the name. The Bored Cactus.

The building was ancient and the paint job was puke yellow and peeling all over the property. I’m guessing many of the inhabitants had a drug problem. Prostitution was likely as well. It was no place for a woman like Emmy.

Despite being at the gas station across the street, I was able to get a good look at it. I asked what she did for food and she said she’d order delivery and just have them leave it outside the door. She’d order a lot so she only had to order twice a week.

I gave her the $347 I had in my wallet. It was a lot more than I usually carried. You can thank Vegas for that. I didn’t mention that I’d won some of the money on Kenneth Croy’s blackjack table.

At first, Emmy didn’t want to take it, but she could tell I was adamant and finally, she relented.

“Stay safe,” I said, on the verge of getting emotional.

“I will. You too. Assume everyone is watching.”

“One last thing” I said. “Can you input my number to allow your burner to receive my incoming texts or phone calls?”

“I can and I will.”

“Thanks. We don’t know what might come up.”

“Agreed.”

“Alright,” I said. “Talk soon, Emmy, and stay safe.”

I said it for a second time. Even that probably wasn’t enough.

“Goodbye, Quint. Thank you.”

She gave me a quick hug, exited the car, and started walking across the street toward The Bored Cactus.

It had been the most bizarre morning of my entire life. As I headed back towards a main highway, I ran through everything we’d talked about.

I tried to focus on the positive. Emmy was alive!

Personally, I couldn’t wait to see the expression on Chance and Liz’s faces upon being reacquainted with their daughter.

That’s assuming Emmy would allow it, and someone didn’t get to her first.
