Interlude

Erik

ERIK BAUER DID NOT mind waiting. He was seated at his desk, with his back to the office door, staring out of the half-shut mini blinds into the parking lot. The first light of the day was beginning to show over the horizon, tinting everything with a pale orange glow. Patience was how he’d built everything, knowing when to lie in wait. Pragmatic brutality had gotten him the rest of the way.

Erik knew he was partly to blame for tonight; he had gone too easy on Peter over the Cobra. He’d had simply forgotten just how willful Peter could be at times. He’d gotten a little too soft. Had Erik just corrected Peter sufficiently at the outset, the issue tonight with the Guos wouldn’t have happened, and his son would have remembered where he stood.

That was the problem with Peter, wasn’t it? The acts of defiance always started small, but it grew into full blown rebellion so quickly.

If only Peter were more like Olivia, Erik wouldn’t have to do these sorts of unpleasant things. Olivia was sharp, smart, strong; she never made the same mistake twice. But Peter? Even when they were children, Peter needed to be toughened up. He needed to be constantly reminded of his limitations. At his core, Peter was weak. He was good enough at theft, but his real talent was for finding what would piss Erik off the most and then doing just that.

Erik cracked his knuckles, methodically popping the joints one by one, first on his left hand and then his right.

What really irritated Erik though was that Peter was fine with reaping the rewards of his business—the cars and the suits and the money enough to do whatever he wanted—but somehow, he thought he was better than Erik. Peter believed he could handle all that dirty money and still come out smelling like a rose. Cynthia had been the same way. She hadn’t understood that everything Erik had done was for her and those kids.

An unremarkable Altima pulled down the drive, kicking up dust in its wake. Earlier, Erik had stationed one of the Bruces out at the back bay. He was to intercept Peter and send him immediately to Erik’s office. After a moment, the stairs begin to clang out Peter’s ascent. Erik shut the blinds.

There was a hesitant knock.

“Come in,” Erik said.

Peter did, closing the door gently behind him. “You wanted to see me?”

Erik did not relish these conversations with his son. “Meilin Guo was furious,” he began. “I don’t like making my partners furious, Peter.”

“I’ve been there personally to handle it. Joey and I came up with a solution that’s amenable to both parties, and we’re back in good standing with the Guos.”

“How much did that amenable solution cost us?” Erik asked.

Peter kept his eyes on the floor. “Ten grand.”

“And how much would it have cost us if you had done your job properly?”

Erik watched the dark look pass over his son’s face, but Peter didn’t rise to take the bait.
