Chapter 12

KAYLEE BIT HER LIP as she watched the surveillance footage the following afternoon, her face scrunching up in concentration. West had hacked into the security system at her apartment complex and pulled the parking lot camera footage from a month ago, specifically the evening the two men had shown up on her doorstep. West was hoping to get a clear shot of them both and run facial recognition through their databases since she couldn’t identify either man by name.

“Damn it. Those are grainy, too,” Jett said as they watched the men looking around the parking lot, and Kaylee could sense his frustration.

“Can we enhance it?” Nick asked, his voice sharp.

“Maybe. Let’s see what other angles we have of them,” West said, clicking a few buttons on his laptop.

As Kaylee watched, she saw herself on the screen, her backpack slung over her shoulder. She looked terrified as she glanced around. The two men hurried her across the parking lot and helped her into a dark SUV. They shut the back door, and moments later, were driving off. West paused the video.

“Shit,” Nick muttered, and she could feel him tensing beside her.

“That was sort of weird to watch,” she admitted. “I wish they’d told me their real names, but that would make it too easy for them to be tracked.” She shook her head, frustrated.

“They knew what they were doing,” Nick said tightly.

“Look at the plate,” West said. “That image is grainy, too, but we might be able to pull some of the letters and numbers. I’ll have my guys work on it.”

Jett’s eyes were focused on the timestamp at the bottom of the screen. “Exactly twenty seventeen—8:17,” he clarified, presumably for her benefit. “West was able to access some of the logs on base. You entered Offutt at eighteen-oh-four, just over two hours earlier.”

“I wasn’t there long,” Kaylee admitted. “I heard the commotion in my office. We’re in cubicles,” she explained. “The higher-ups have office doors. I got my wallet and then got out of there. Cornwell tried to speak with me, but I ran. He wasn’t about to chase me through the halls where other people could see us. I didn’t even go to the grocery store like I’d planned, just headed back to my apartment. I must’ve gotten home around six forty-five. I was panicking and didn’t know what to do. I almost called my supervisor, but again, I hoped it could wait until morning. Suddenly, those guys showed up on my doorstep.”

“Cornwell came up with a plan on the fly and arranged for you to be taken into custody,” Ford said, scrubbing a hand over his jaw. “He’s probably worked with them before if he was able to arrange this so quickly.”

“We’ll figure out who they are,” Nick said, his voice hard. He’d seemed angry as they watched the footage, and Kaylee knew exactly why. She was lucky she hadn’t been hurt. Killed. Other women in her situation might not have been as fortunate.

“There’s no footage from the time of the incident at your apartment yesterday,” West said.
